OBITUARY MR. ALFRED PIPER The death occurred at the Tumut District Hospital on Saturday last, April 26, of Mr. Alfred Piper, of Bombowlee, who had he lived until August 10, would have been 83 years of age. The late Mr. Piper was born at Bombowlee, the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Piper, his two brothers, Israel and Samuel, and only sister, Dinah (Mrs. .Jas. Morton) predeceased him. He never married, but he was fortunate in that from his nephew, Mr. CeciPiper, he received the attention and affection of a son. Mr. Piper had been an outstanding bushman and drover in three States of the Commonwealth, much of his droving being done in the employment of Naughton Bros., graziers of N.S. Wales. Some of his trips were long and arduous, one trip especially from Yancania Station, north-western New South Wales, to Wodonga, in Victoria, with sheep: and another from Hay (N.S.W.) to Cunnamulla in Queensland and back to Hay. For Naugliton Bros. he drove many mobs to the Melbourne market from around Swan Hill and the Moulamein. Many of his droving associates have passed beyond, but some still live, one of these at least being Michael Donohue and another Charles Piper. For his epitaph we quote the words of an old drover on hearing of his demise: "You could not replace him to-day." For the last twenty years Mr. Piper had retired from droving and had carried on pasloral pursuits on his father's one-time property, "Dotswood," Bombowlee Creek. Several months ago be came into town to live with his nephew (Mr. Cecil Piper) and his wife in Lambie-Street, Tumut, and on Monday of last week was admitted as the result of a sudden illness to hospital, where he died on Saturday morning at 8.30 following a heart attack. The funeral look place on Sunday afternoon after a short service in the Presbyterian Church. Rev. A. Brown officiating in the church and at the graveside in the new cemetery. Messrs. W. Beavan and Son had charge of the funeral arrangements and the pall-bearers were Messrs. Cecil Piper (nephew), Bert Lowther (cousin), Cliff., Claude, Lou and Allan Piper. Amongst the beautiful floral tributes were noted those from Cecil, Glo, and faimily, Angus, Lola, Laurie and Robyn: E. Lawton, Kate, Ruth and family: Mrs. W. Havdon and family: Claude and Ruby: A.
