The Tumut and Adelong Times 24 Jan 1933
OBITUARY ROBERT KENNEDY BROUGHTON Mr. Robert Kennedy Broughton, whose death was briefly announced in last Friday's issue as having taken place at his residence, on Tuesday last, and who would have attained his 86th birthday on Sunday next, was a scion of the old stock of English gentlemen who were amongst the earliest Government officials of this State, his grandfather being Commissary William Broughton, whose regiment came to Australia with Captain Cook in the first fleet at the close of the last century. He was a son of one of this district's early pioneers, the late Mr. R. K. Broughton, who settled here in 1838 and owned the whole of Gadara, originally a run of 5000 acres. He was a man of sound principles, of true gentlemanly bearing, and a valued friend and neighbor. Upon his mother's death and the subsequent subdivision of the Broughton estate, over 30 years ago, he purchased a portion of it (then confined to 2700 acres freehold) and went in for grazing, naming it "Woonora." In June, 1905, he married Mary, eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs George Hayes, of "Havilah,'' Gadara, two sons, Robert Kennedy and Ancher ("Tim"), being the issue to the union. Up to within two months of his death he was apparently in good health, despite his years and small, slight stature, but from then on he continued to fail. On Monday his illness alarmed his family and Dr. J. W. Mason was consulted and attended the patient, the examination revealing that the end was close at hand, so his relatives were apprised of his critical condition, and it came all too suddenly, he passing away at 5.30 p.m. the next day. The mourners are his widow and two sons, two sisters, Misses Emily ("The Grange," Tumut) and Emma Broughton (Sydney), and one brother, Mr. James Broughton (Gadara). Four sisters (Mesdames Harry J. Sharp, Bland Clayton, W. C. Webb and Wm Manning) and one brother (Mr. Archer Broughton, "The Grange," Tumut) predeceased him. A large cortege of sympathising friends attended the funeral which took place on Wednesday, the remains being laid to rest in the C. of E. portion of the Adelong Cemetery, Rev. A. W. Harris officiating at the graveside. The casket-bearers were R. K. and A. Broughton (sons), Hamilton, Hayes (brother-in-law), James Broughton jr, J. Burleigh and Robt. H. Sharp (nephews). |
