OBITUARY. M. Boylson, Esq., J.P. — On July 29th, the late respected Mr. Boylson breathed his last at Bathurst. He had been suffering for the past three months from dropsy. During his illness he spent most of his time in prayer and imparting advice to those around him, and when the last sad moment arrived, he called his family around him, and with the Crucifix in one hand, and his eyes raised to Heaven in silent prayer, he gave them his last blessing, and soon after, without a sigh, passed away from earth.

Born in 1813, in the County of Tipperary, he arrived in this colony with wife and one child in 1843. He first settled in Monaro, where he resided about seven years, and next tried his luck on the goldfields of Victoria and New South Wales, but after a few years he settled down at Ashfiold in the buttery and colonial produce line of business. Just as he was independent, a fire consumed his premises and all that they contained, and being uninsured, he was left without a penny. His good name here stood him a true friend. He removed to the junction of the Parramatta and Liverpool roads, where, after a short time, he built the Phoenix Mill. He soon retrieved his disasters, but a similar misfortune overtakes him here, for again his property is burnt down, and, as in the previous ease, he was uninsured. Nothing daunted, however, he determined to succeed, and he did succeed. He rebuilt the Phoenix Mills. His sons were now grown up, and all worked with a will. For their sakes he increased his business, and purchased with that object, the Union Mills at Bathurst, which, with the improvement he effected, cost £15,000. More recently still the Sydney Flour Mills, late Flour Company's Mill (one of the best in the colony), was purchased. The three mills combined constitute the largest milling business in the colony, and has been hitherto conducted under the name of Boylson and Sons.

Apart from his milling business, we understand he leaves a valuable private property and between fifty and sixty thousand pounds to his widow and family. He was a generous supporter of his Church and all his life a practical Catholic in the strictest sense of the word, and saw that all under his care should be the same. Three of his daughters are professed nuns in the Presentation Convent, Hobart Town. Two younger daughters, who have been studying there, intimate their intention of following the holy example of their sisters.

The corpse was conveyed on Wednesday by special train to Ashfield station, accompanied by Rev. P. Ryan, of Carcoar, a near friend of the family. A large number of sorrowing friends of deceased were there waiting the arrival of the train to follow the remains to Petersham Cemetery, where they were interred in the family vault. The ritual service was performed by Dr. Coletti, assisted by Fathers Fitzpatrick, Ryan, Garavel, M'Carthy, and Gough.

Michael Boylson is how he made a quantum leap (with his wife Catherine) from being Bounty Immigrants in 1841, & on arrival being employed on a property in the Monaro area, to becoming (with a number of his sons) the largest flourmiller in the Colony of NSW, with flour mills in Sydney (the corner of Parramatta Rd & Liverpool Rd, where they also had the Speed the Plough Inn, inner Sydney (a steam powered mill) & Bathurst.
