Personal Notes:
The Tumut and Adelong Times 27 Jul 1926
MR. THEO. W. WITTS. Yet another of the noble band of old pioneers — alas! they are becoming only too few — whose energies and indomitable perseverance transformed the primeval wilderness into roseate paths for those coming after them to tread, passed away at the residence of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Windridge, Wynyard Hotel, Tumut, at 1.20 on Saturday morning, in the person of Mr. Theodore Witts, aged 79 years. With his wife, the late Mr. Witts arrived in Tumut from Manly a few weeks back, seeking a change, as his health had not previously been too robust. He appeared to enjoy it, and the renewal of associations with many old-time friends cheered him up. He was about as sprightly as ever, chatting airily with all he came in contact. Yesterday week he had a seizure, and was obliged to take to his bed, from which he never afterwards rose, and nothing could be done by the local medicos to retain the vital spark. The subject of this obituary was born on Monaro, his father being the Chief Constable at Queanbeyan, who died at Bombala at the age of 80 years. In 1866, when quite a youth, he was engaged in mail contracting, carrying the mails between Bairnsdale to Cooma, and many were the hairbreadth escapes from death he had crossing the swollen rivers en route. In 1872 he came to Adelong and was employed as storeman with the late Mr. Rodd, then with his successor, the late Mr. William Budd, in the old store years later occupied as the "Adelong and Tumut Express" and ''Tumut Advocate" offices. It was in 1872 [sic should be 1874] he married Emily, the eldest daughter of the late Daniel Boston, of Adelong, to whom there were four sons and two daughters, two sons, Daniel and Percy, predeceasing him. Thence he joined the service of the late Mr. Channon, afterwards Eyles and Park's business, and 33 years ago took over the Royal Hotel, Adelong, the property of the late Mr. Matthew Cowan sr. While in this business, he purchased the Commercial Hotel property, which he conducted until his retirement from active business pursuits, 27 years since. With the exception of the short while he came back to conduct this hotel, between changes in the licensees, he lived with his wife and family in retirement in his private home on the Wagga road, and 12 years ago they went to Manly to live, where he remained until coming to Tumut a few weeks back. Deceased was the soul of honor and integrity in all his dealings with his fellow men. Although he was so much associated with hotelkeeping, he was a total abstainer, and always avoided serving with liquor a person showing signs of intoxication. With his good wife they provided the very best procurable for their patrons, and to stay at their establishment was truly staying at a home away from home. Besides a sorrowing widow, two sons, viz, William Myles, of Manly, and Victor Barton, of Tempe, and three daughters. Bertha (Mrs. F. J. Windridge, Tumut), Ada, (Mrs. C. Dodd, Hornsby), and Maude (Mrs. Harry Butler, Junee), and only surviving sister, Mrs. Jas. Martin, of Croydon, two step-brothers, Mr. A. A. Bell, of Arncliffe, and Mr. A. C. Witts, of Port Hacking, and a step-sister, Mrs Dawson, of North Manly, are left to mourn their great loss. They were all present when the deceased breathed his last. The funeral took place on Sunday last, the remains being interred in the Methodist portion of the Adelong Cemetery. The cortege was a very lengthy one, tacit testimony to the esteem and respect in which deceased was held. Rev. Morice J. Blok performed the burial obsequies. Mr O. M. Betts read the Masonic service, deceased being an old Freemason. He. was also an M.U. Oddfellow of years standing. The coffinbearers were Messrs. R. J. and W. Benson, Jno. Tonking and W. J. Prowse.

The remains of the late Mr. Theo W. Witts were laid to rest in the Adelong Cemetery on Sunday last. The funeral, a motor one, came from Tumut direct to the cemetery, where a great number of local folk had assembled to pay their last respects. Mr. Witts was exceptionally well known here, where he had lived so many years. He was a prominent Free mason, and was accorded a Masonic funeral by the brethren here ; in fact, he was the oldest member of the Masonic craft belonging to Lodge St. Clair, with tlie exception of Wor Bro. C. Passlow, who joined the same night as the late Wor Bro. Witts. Whilst living here, he always took a keen interest in his lodge, and was also a prominent Oddfellow.
