Personal Notes: |
Thomas Humphrys was a stock and station agent, town Councillor, Mayor of Junee,on the Hospital Board, Show Society, Racing Club and Masonic Lodge. T C was known as the father of Junee.
Australian Town and Country Journal 3 Sep 1887 JUNEE. MR. T. C. HUMPHREYS, J.P., the Mayor of Junee, settled in that progessive place some six years ago, when it contacined only about 100 in- habitants ; and he entered into mercantile business with the late Mr. W. C. Seignor shortly afterward. With the view of improving the town Mr. Humphrys started a progress committee, of which he was a member for four years, when he thought the place had grown sufficiently to be incorporated; and he consequently agitated to that end until his object was gained. A petition for incorporation was extensively signed; and the various other; legal requirements were complied with. The first Mayor was Mr. G. J. Roberts (a very popular resident of the district). But soon after his election the Minister, Mr. Lyne, who was then Minister of Works, forbidding civil servants to hold seats in municipal councils, compelled him to resign and Mr. Humphrys was chosen in his place for the remainder of that year, and was unanimously re-elected at the beginning of the present municipal year. He has taken an active part in all public movements in the district, and was placed on the commission of the peace several years ago. Junee was incorporated in July, 1886; and the first election of aldermen took place in the following month. The population is about 1500, and the revenue from rates alone is £7700. The borough, contains several hotels and stores, Episcopal, Roman Catholic, and Wesleyan Churches, two banks, a public school, and post and telegraph offices. Many of the residents are railway employes; and there is in the borough a railway locomotive depot, with large sheds, at which some three dozen locomotive engines are stationed. The surrounding country is principally pastoral, and there are several fine sheep and cattle stations in the neighborhood. Mr. T. C. HUMPHRYS, Mayor of Junee. |
