The Tumut Advocate 21 Aug 1917
OBITUARY MR. THOMAS DODD SR. It becomes our painful duty to have to record the death at the ripe old age of 88 years of another worthy pioneer, in the person of Mr. Thos Dodd sr. which occurred at his residence, on Macfarlane's Creek, on Friday last, the cause of death being attributed to blood poisoning of his foot, culminating in gangrene. Dr Clouston was called in and considered amputation the only remedy suggested, but not advisable owing to his patient's extreme age. It seems but the other day since we saw him in town, when he looked hale and hearty—not a stoop to indicate age, and one might have taken a lease of his life. Alas ! too often the hero of to-day is the victim of tomorrow. The departed one hailed from the Old Country, and came to Australia in the early sixties, and engaged for a time in a wine and spirit store in Sydney. Leaving there he went to Beechworth (Victoria) where he plunged into mining. Later he went to Lambing Flat, at the time of the riot, and thence be went to the Snowy River, as Kiandra was then called, when the field was in full swing, and 20,000 miners were then computed to be there. Leaving Kiandra with indifferent success, he went into the butchering line in Adelong; later he worked with his brother, John Dodd, the well known pioneer butcher of Tumut, on the site of the present Bank of N.S. Wales. In May, 1870, he married Miss C. McAlister, with whom he lived happily until death called her away on 16/9/1915. Until late years he engaged in pastoral work, and with his worthy wife reared a large family of six sons, viz : William and Thomas Arthur (Tumut), Charles and Clarence (Hornsby), and Henry and Edward (soldiers at the front); also five daughters, viz ; Elizabeth, Mrs. J. H. Hargreaves, Mrs. M. Murray, Mrs. Herb James and Mrs. George Masters. These are left to mourn the loss of a patient, painstaking and loving father, whose life was centred in the welfare of his offspring. One son, Robert, predeceased him. The funeral took place on Saturday last, his remains being interred in the Church of England portion of the new cemetery. Messrs Masters Bros were the undertakers and carried out their duties in a most efficient manner. Rev C. E. Burgess officiated at the grave. We tender the bereaved ones our deepest condolence in the dark shadows that have fallen across their path. |
