OBITUARY MR. GEORGE EDWARDS The death occurred on Friday last of Mr. Thomas George Edwards, well-known stockman of Tumut, at the age of 73 years. Deceased had been a patient in Tumut and District Hospital for about a week suffering from heart trouble. He returned home and his condition gradually grew worse and he passed away on Friday as stated. The late Mr. Edwards was born at Gympie, Queensland, where his father conducted the Black Horse Hotel. As a young man he was an outstanding horseman and stockman. After a short period of employment on surrounding properties he joined the Queensland Mounted Police Force, of which he was a member for 12 years. He was especially recommended for the position by the Police Commissioner of Queensland. During the visit to Australia of the late King George v, then the Prince of Wales, deceased was selected with three others from five hundred mounted police to head the procession in Brisbane during the celebrations. He also in North Queensland was with Lord Lamington as personal escort during the latter's visit, to Australia. In 1896 at Croydon, North Queensland, the late Mr. Edwards married Miss Searle of Stoney Creek, South Gundagai, who survives together with two daughters, Mary (Mrs. Mick Barbour, Tumut), and Annie, (Mrs. Richard Sturt, Tumut), and one son, Thomas George (Tumut). Mr. and Mrs. Edwards snr. first came to Tumut over 40 years ago and the former entered the employ of the Wilkinson family at Yellowin and then at Darbalara. Later he purchased a farming property at Blowering. For some years past he had been employed by Messrs. W. Horsley of Yabtree and Waugh of Narandera. He was in their employ right up to the time of his recent illness. Mr. Edwards frequently passed through Tumut with large mobs of cattle and sheep en route to snow lease country taken up by his employers. He was of the hardy type of stockman and was a favorite among his confreres. He was the last surviving member of a family of seven. The funeral took place on Saturday last, leaving from the Catholic Church. Deceased was a member of the Holy Name Society and the Rosary was recited prior to the departure of the cortfege or the R.C. portion of the Tumut New Cemetery, where interment took place. The pall-bearers were Messrs. Allan Downing, Alex. Webb, Dick Beck, Wm. Murray, Sid. Hughes and Harry Chave. Rev. Fr. Commins officiated at the graveside and Mr. H. W.
