Personal Notes:
Robert Holt Best, together with brothers Peter & William were the first to occupy and establish the Wagga Wagga Pastoral Run in the early 1830s. He was listed as the first licence holder of the Wagga Wagga Run in 1837. Robert managed the run until he was thrown from a horse and killed in 1853. He established his homestead ‘Flowerdale’ in 1853. Robert held the contract for delivering mail twice a week between Tarcutta and Wagga Wagga in late 1848 until his death in 1853.

- Notes: E. Irvin in Place of Many Crows is wrong in his assumption that the Tompson and Best sons then in their late 'teens would not have been mature enough to assume responsibility on the pastoral runs. Robert Holt Best was mature enough to be executor for his father who died in 1836,23 and was listed as the first licence-holder of the Wagga Wagga run in 18372 Irvin is also astray in his state-ment, Nor would people of the social standing of the Bests and Tompsons have thought it either desirable or necessary to move their families to a new location before adequate housing was pro-vided'.25 Social standing had little influence on early pastoral expansion; and, moreover, it is very difficult to estimate the social standing in the 1830s of successful and estimable emancipists like George Best and Charles Tompson.
