OBITUARY. MR. ROBERT JAMES MONTGOMERY A very old pioneer of the Wagga district, in the person of Mr. Robert James Montgomery, died at his residence, Johnson Street, Mona Vale, Sydney, on July 30 last, at the advanced age of 95 years. The deceased was for 38 years a Government mail contractor on various routes throughout the Riverina, including Wagga to Narandera, which route had to be done in three stages. These were the strenuous days of the old stage coach, when hardships were encountered, and the life generally was in marked contrast to the mail work of to-day with fast travelling motor vehicles, and long stages an unknown quality. Many of the older residents of the Corowa district, incl Mr & Mrs J. Shaw, of Queen, Street, will remember the late Mr. Montgomery, as he passed her place on many occasions on one of the mail routes. He was a well known and very popular identity, kind-hearted and generous in the extreme, yet sturdy, fearless and conscientious, one of a type fast disappearing, if not already passed owing to the changed conditions of the means of transport through the advent of the motor car. After relinquishing his interest in the mail contracting the deceased went back to America, his native country. Returning to Australia about 14 years ago he settled down in Sydney until his death. He was very active to the last, and had possession of all his faculties. When the American Fleet visited Sydney he attended a reception in their honor, and, being an American he naturally became overjoyed at seeing and meeting his countrymen. It is thought that the excitement overtaxed his heart, as he died in hls sleep. The late Mr. Montgomery leaves a grown-up family of two sons and six daughters to mourn the loss of a most devoted father. His wife, who was a native of Wagga, predeceased him about nine years ago. He came to Australia when 17 years of age, being born in Canada . All the family were born in the Wagga district. The sons are Messrs. Stanley and William Montgomery, the former having driven the mail coach on the Daysdale Urana route for Mr. F. E. Fogarty, and has mail contracts in the Wagga district at the present time. The latter resides at Urana. The daughters are Mrs. McPhail (Sydney), Mrs. IH. Morris (Lakemba, Sydney), Mrs. C Myers (Drummoyne), Mrs. Cox (Cottee, near Coolamon), Mrs. Ferd Wulff (Wagga), and Mrs. C. A. Newman (Corowa). He also leaves 30 grandchildren and one great grandchild. |

There are a few errors without me looking too hard, but the one I would like corrected is Robert James Montgomery’s birth and death. Sadly he wasn’t great at working out his age and his age varied quite a lot when he registered any of the children he and Louisa had. He wasn’t the only one with that problem of calculating their age - a couple of his siblings had the same problem. I guess their education wasn’t the greatest. However I take the 1851 Ontario census as the correct ages of family, as the parents would have given out the information. Therefore he was born 1838 or 1839 (the 1851 census was actually taken in 1852 and he is listed as 13), in Windham, Norfolk Co, Ontario (Not 1844). He immigrated to Australia in 1862 and settled in the Wagga area. He died 30-Jul-1925 in Mona Vale, Sydney NSW. His death cert says he was 92, his obituary has him as 95, but he was actually 87 yrs old. His wife Louisa Turner did die in 1916 at The Rock railway station as she was waiting for a train to Urana. |
