Personal Notes: |
Wilfred LIvering Cooke b. July 1 1867, London England to Emma Plumridge b. 1843 West Wycombe, and John Lovering Cooke b. Apr 30 1834 Tawstock Devon.
Wilfred was left an orphan at the tender age of 5 yrs. His mother died Oct. 1871 and father Dec. 1872. Despite the fact that he had "many" aunties and uncles , plus his mother's father at age 54 was still living, he was sent to and raised in a George Mueller Orphanage. ( see 1881 census). We were told that he spoke French better than English at that time due to his father's job that was in Boulogne sur Mer France. Maybe this didn't help the young gaffer with someone from the family taking him to live with them. He had a very good bass voice and sang with quartets in England and Wales winning many contests. He sang at Crystal Place and Albert Hall. He married a Welsh lady, Sarah Hitchings in 1896 and had 3 sons. they were all musical. The eldest Wilfred was a very gifted violinist. Unfortunately Wilfred's health was never very strong (his mother and her sibling ALL died young.) Hoping like so many others to find a better life for his young family Wilfred immigrated to Toronto Cd. in 1910. Then W.W. 1.... The eldest son Wilfred enlisted (under age) and the parents agreed to let him stay as he was in the regiment's band. He was shipped off to England in the fall of 1916. In early 1917 the war going badly for Britain, they disbanded the band and all the members were quickly put into training. Wilfred was reported "as missing in action" Aug. 1917....... This broke both of his parents hearts and health. The whole family was affected. Then right after the war an army buddy visiting Wilfred's parents in Toronto told them that he has "seen and spoken" with Wilfred in a hospital in England!!! With this one ray of hope the whole family sailed for England in 1919/20 searching army hospitals.... but to no avail. There is a gravestone with Wilfred's name on in France......the big question -is it his grave??.... or was there a 'mix up' with I.D. and he was "alive" as told in a hospital, but maybe not well and with memory and I.D. loss??? Will we ever know the real story? Returning to Canada the young family struggled to get on with life without the eldest son and brother... but neither parent was well. Sadly Wilfred died at age 63 yrs. in 1930. He is buried in Prospect Cemetery, in Toronto along with his wife Sarah who passed away March 2 1942, one month after her 70th B/Day. |
