Honours and Awards - William Beresford Muir
Service number: 2605 Rank: Private Unit: 55th Battalion Conflict: First World War, 1914-1918 Recommendation: Military Medal Date of recommendation: 3 October 1918 For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during annattack on the Hindenburg Line N. of BELLICQURT on 30th Sept. 1918. In the absence of stretcher bearers this man was detailed to attend to the wounded. After a line had been established this gallant, soldier, heedless of all personal danger. and aIIthough the whole area was being swept by extremely heavy M.G. and shell fire, advanced in to No Man's Land and carried several wounded men back to a place of safety. He showed great courage in the face of many difficulties and was undoubtedly instrumental in saving the lives of many. He worked arduously and continuously throughout the whole operation and his unselfishness is worthy of the highest praise.
