THE LATE MR. WILLIAM CARTER. The late Mr. William Carter, one of the early settlers of the Gilmore district, who died at his home, Ferndale, Gilmore Valley, on Wednesday last, had reached the ripe old age of 88 years, senile decay being the cause of his demise. Deceased was on Reedy Flat (Batlow) in the palmy days of the gold era and in late years selected and settled on Gilmore, and acquired other properties afterwards. He was a quiet unobtrusive man, of frugal habits, and whose integrity was never once in question, all his dealings being, aboveboard and conscientiously carried out. These admirable traits won for him the esteem and respect of all who knew him or had any land, stock or business transactions with him. He was a keen judge of stock and had an intimate knowledge of the problems of the man on the land. For over half a century he remained on the old homestead. He leaves a sorrowing widow, only two months his junior, who was a true helpmeet throughout all the trials, tribulations and vicissitudes the pioneers went through, and with which they can justly be numbered. Mrs. Carter's maiden name was Callaway, her brother being Mr. I. Callaway, of Batlow. Deceased left no other relatives herearound outside his own family, which consists of four daughters (Mrs. H. O'Sullivan and Miss Doll Carter, of Sydney, Misses Aice and Eva of Gilmore) and two sons (George of South Coast and Thomas of Deniliquin). The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon, the remains being interred in the Church of England portion of the Tumut Old Cemetery, Rev. F. W. Rettie officiating at the graveside and Messrs Fuller and Burt being the undertakers. The bearers of the coffined body were Messrs P. McKey, Geo. Carter (nephew), Phil, and Geo. Butler, John Whatman and Stan Dickenson. |
