- Notes: Samuel Mackay was born in Ireland and immigrated to Australia in 1861, aged 19 years, aboard the sailing ship "Peerless". He arrived in Sydney and soon after travelled by boat to Twofold Bay and from there walked, carrying his pack, to Kiandra to join his brother George, where gold had been discovered. At an auction he purchased store property and some land at Adaminaby and run a business for several years. He left Kiandra and travelled to New Zealand following the gold discoveries but soon returned to Kiandra and married Mary Watkins. He and Mary selected a small area of land near Coolringdon and for about 4 years he and his brother George conducted a store-keeping business on the property at Adaminaby which he bought previously at the auction.
He then bought the Frying Pan Run at Adaminaby from John Cruickshank and selected 320 acres and built a home for himself and Mary and they and their family lived there for over 46 years. By this time his original selection had grown to over 20,000 acres of freehold land where he ran sheep and cattle.
