- Notes: I think it quite possible that the William Wells who died 1852 at 37 is our Wm Geo. but no way of being certain, of course. On the assumption he was, I obtained his burial certificate (as no registration pre 1855) in case of more info, but it just stated: abode -Glebe, died age 37, Jan 29 1852 and buried Jan 30 at Camperdown Cemetery (which was very big and adjacent to St Stephen's Church, Newtown. Only a little left now, next to the church). It seems that he did die some years before 1868, because the Sydney Almanac for 1860's onwards (the original of which I was able to look at in State Library years ago) listed: 1864 - Lavinia Wells, nurse, Norton Street Glebe, and 1865 - Lavinia Wells, Franklyn Place Glebe. George John Wells was listed as a plasterer 1863-66 living Greek Street Glebe 1863, and St John's Street Forest Lodge Estate 1865 and '66. In 1877 - sewing machine depot No. 1 Hunter Street Sydney. |

- Notes: William George Wells was born Feb 14, 1814 in Shacklewell, Middlesex and baptised March 6 ,1814 in St James Westminster. His sister Eliza Mary, born April 2, 1812, was baptised with him. His parents John William Wells and Sarah were living in Crown Court, Soho, and his father at that time was working as a waiter. I also have the ship's records pertaining to the immigration of William and Lavinia to Australia in 1842 (demographic details were required as they were Bounty immigrants) which confirm the parentage and birthplaces of William and Lavinia.
And 18 Feb 2014 e-mail the ship William and Lavinia came to Australia in, a barque called Sir Edward Paget, docked in Port Jackson not Botany Bay. |
