He immigrated 11 May 1883 to Arrived in Cooktown Queensland Australia. 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1863 2 PLAC Sevenoaks Kent England Archive records at Runcorn reveal that William Hills aged 19 years and single, arrived on the vessel "MERKARA" at Cooktown Queensland on the 11th May 1883. The vessel left Plymouth England on the 15th march 1883. The "Merkara" was a one funnel, 3 masts (rigged for sail) iron construction single screw ship of 2,971 tons, length 368.2 ft x 37.2 ft. The vessel was launched on the 7th July 1875 and operated for the British India Associated Steamers. In 1901, the vessel was broken up at Bombay after being stripped at Calcutta. - refer Merchant Fleets by Duncan Haws, vol.11 British India S.N.Co.
