Personal Notes: |
Before he went off to war, Kitty announced her engagement to chartered accountant William BATHGATE born 31 Jul 1914 at Petersham. Bill was a Lieutenant with 22nd Brigade HQ, Eighth Division and sailed on the Queen Mary on 03 Feb 1941.
A newspaper photo of that date shows the men formed up on the boat deck, Lieut. Bathgate in charge - and directly beside him is Pte Frank Elworthy, with Pte Frank Mackenzie (who later married Nancye Elworthy) in the next row! At that time none of these men had any inkling they would become connected by family marriages. When Singapore fell to the Japanese, all three spent more than three years as prisoners of war; it was not until 25 Sep 1945 that Bill returned to Kitty. By some major miracle, a wedding was arranged for eight days later! By another miracle (aided somewhat by utmost care over the years) Bill had managed to retain his officer's uniform - mostly by burying it. After a thorough dry-cleaning, he wore it to his wedding at Shore Chapel on 05 Oct 1945. A reception at the big family home at Wollsronecraft followed. |
