The Gundagai Independent 23 Aug 1928
ARCHIBALD JOHN SINCLAIR "One Who Knew Him," writes: — The death recently occurred at Mt. St. Joseph's, Young, of Mr. Ar- chibald John Sinclair, at the advanced age of 80 years. The deceased was the last surviving member of the family of the late William and Flora Sinclair, pioneer settlers from Lochalsh in the Scottish Highlands, who came to Australia in the forties. The Sinclair family will be remembered as being one of the first to take up land at Eurongilly near Junee just on 60 years ago. The deceased gentleman was married twice, his first wife being Miss K. McDonald, from the Goulburn district, who predeceased him many years ago, the surviving issue of the union being: Sister Mary John, of the Sister's of Mercy Old People's Home, Young; Mrs. G. Barry, of Sydney; Mrs. T. Whittaker, of Eurongilly; Colin Gordon, and Sydney Duncan Sinclair, both of Goulburn. The deceased's second marriage was with Agnes Crowe, of Mitta Mitta, and she also pre-deceased him, the surviving members of the family of this marriage being Mrs. C. Moore, Sydney; William and Bertram Lindsay Sinclair, of Eurongilly. Surviving close relatives of the late Mr. Sinclair are the McRae family, of Clear Hills, near Taralga, and the McInness family, of Middle Arm, near Goulburn. Relatives in Scotland include Canon Monsignor McQueen, Mr. C. McRae (of Kintail), Miss Kate McRae (of Dornie) and Mrs. Duff. The deceased, when a resident of Eurongilly, was very popular, and was noted for his kindness and hospitality. During the closing years of his life he suffered much from asthma, and entered the "Home," at Young, to receive the loving care of his daughter (Sister Mary John). His end was very peaceful, and fortified by the ministrations of religion. The burial took place in the Catholic portion of the Young ceme- tery, the officiating clergymen being Very Rev. Dean Hennessy, Fathers Bartley and Lynch, and there were also present representatives from the Christian Bros., the four sons of deceased, son-in-law (Mr. T. Whittaker), and grandson (Mr. J. Whittaker) . |
