The second child was Asenath Ellen born in 1858, who wed Allfreid (Alfred) WALTHER born on 25 Ju11853, second of nine children of German-born Catharina and Johannes. When they wed at St David's, Surry Hills on 05 Jun 1879, Alfred was a storekeeper from Bodalla and Asenath lived in Elizabeth Street.
Between 1880-1892 they had seven children (Walter 1882 and Roy 1889 both died in infancy) and two adopted daughters. Asenath is also believed to have fostered several children.
The first child was Albina (Alma) Wilhelmina 1880 who wed a butcher, Newton FUCHS and had a daughter Merle who married Albert MILLER and adopted two children.
Otto Victor Hubert, 15 May 1881 married twice, firstly to Olivia CARUGATI there were nine children from this marriage but the fourth child Olive died in childhood. Irene wed Rudolph TEGEL and Vincent HELLYER; Stanley (informant on his mother's death certificate) married a lady named Mona; Otto Karl wed Grace GOODBUN then Olive BUDD; Alfred married Violet GOODBUN, sister of Otto's wife Grace. John (who provided some great reminiscences) also married twice, to Ethel BRETT and to Beryl CUMMING. Grace wed Keggan GALE and Frederick died accidentally when only 21. Oswen, the last of the family wed Joyce PAULL.
Asenath Walther was remembered by one grandchild as "a strange, not overly good-Iooking but good woman who had 'second sight'.... She had a habit of using three or four handwriting styles when writing one letter." Another recalls her as 'a nice old lady'. She also died from broncho-pneumonia and a cerebral thrombosis. Prior to her death on Anzac Day 1944, aged 87, she had been living at 109 Darling Street, Balmain, a substantial two storey house still standing on the comer of The Avenue. She was buried in the Methodist section of the Field of Mars Cemetery at Ryde two days later. |
