| Personal Notes: |
The Tumut and Adelong Times 4 Jan 1938
OBITUARY MRS. JAMES ELPHICK Deep sorrow generally was expressed on Sunday afternoon, December 26, when the tidings were circulated of the demise of Mrs. Wilhemina Elphick, wife of Deputy Shire President James Elphick, which took place at their residence, Capper-st., Tumut. Mrs. Elphick had not enjoyed good health for a number of years, and the culminating point of the indisposition was a stroke about six months ago, eventually ending in death, in her 78th year, notwithstanding that the services of a trained nurse and all that was possible for medical skill could do was unavailing. To those who knew deceased, her loveable and kindly disposition appealed in a very deep sense. She was a native of Adelong, being the second daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. C. Schintler, of that town, and on May 24, 1880, was married to Mr. Jas. Elphick at Adelong, where her husband not only carried on a lucrative business but was the outstanding leading light in public life. With the opportunities offering Mr. Elphick in Tumut, they removed hither some 33 years ago. They reared a family of 11 children and one died in infancy. The family is intact with the exception of a son, Frank Manfred, who was killed in the Great War. The surviving children are:— James Ernest (Katoomba), Florence (Mrs. G. Barker, Brisbane), Jane (Mrs. S. Stone, Glasgow), Edith (Mrs. Geo. W. Speirs, Griffith), Albert (Arncliffe), Arthur (Bondi), Emily (Mrs. B. Jenkins, Berrigan), Norman (Roy, Hillston), Septimus (Marrickville) and Walter (Jack, Goulburn). Roy is a patient in the Tumut and District Hospital, having sustained serious injuries in a motor accident while returning home to Hillston after a visit to this mother, who had rallied from the coma she had lapsed into when he was summoned to her bedside. There are four sisters and one brother of the late Mrs. Elphick living, viz: Mrs. Fred. Capel, of Adelong; Mrs. W. Burns, Guilford; Mrs. L. Tomsett, Dapto; Mrs. J. Lascombe, Mosman; and one brother, Charles, of Bendigo (V.). The late Mrs . Elphick was Mayoress of Tumut for a much longer period than any other person. During the Great War she took a prominent part in the Red Cross and War Chest local bodies, besides identifying herself closely with charitable movements. The greatest sympathy is expressed for the sorrowing husband and family, for if ever there was one whose devotion to husband and children was an example to emulate and was a true helpmeet it was the subject of this obituary. The funeral took place on the Monday following her demise, the large cortege moving from All Saints' Church, after the Rector (Rev. S. Broadfoot) held a short service, for the family vault in the Church of England portion of the New Cemetery. Rev. S. Broadfoot officiated at the graveside and Mr. C. W. Burt conducted the funeral and burial arrangements. Five sons— Messrs Ern., Arthur, Albert, Jack and Sep . Elphick— and a son-in-law, Mr, Bert Jenkins, were the pallbearers. Representatives of various public bodies attended, as follows: Tumut Shire Council, the president (Cr. H. Godfrey) and Crs. L. E. Quarmby and L. F. Roche; Tumut Hospital Board and Turf Club, Mr. A. J. S. Frost;. Masonic Lodge, Wor. Bros. W. D. Percival and W. J. Prowse; . M.U. I.O.O.F., Bros. G. Masters and O. C. Beegling; Tumut Town Band, Mr. R. R. Quarmby; Tumut Subbranch R.S.S.I.L.A., Mr. T. N. Learmont; All Saints' Church council, Mr. J. French. The Rev. S. Broadfoot officiated, at the graveside and Mr. C, W. Burt carried out the funeral arrangements. There were many beautiful floral tributes, including wreaths from Cr. and Mrs. H. Godfrey, Mr. and Mrs. H. Crampton, Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Weeden and family, Mr. and Mrs. F. L. Baker, Mr. and Mrs. Corr, Tumut Cafe, Mr. and Mrs. Archic Macadam, Bert Em. and family, Mrs. Jenkins and family, Tumut Town Band, Mr. and Mrs. T. N. Learmont, Art and Ede. W. Connors and family, Mrs. Masters and family, Lizzie Elphick and family, Mr. and Mrs. H. Moon and family, Mr. and Mrs. H. James, Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Quarmby and family, Mr. and Mrs. G. Masters and family, Mr. and Mrs. F. Johnson, Misses S. and E. Carr, Councillors and staff of the Tumut Shire Council, Mr. and Mrs. G. Bates and family, Mr. and Mrs. J.
