Death of an Old Manaro Resident MR WILLIAM J. McGUFFICKE At the advanced age of 85 years, Mr William Jardine McGufficke, passed away, after a short illness, on Saturday last, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs Weston, of Leesville, Jindabyne. The interment took place at the Gegedzerick cemetery, on Sunday last, in the presence of a large number of relatives and residents of the district, the funeral service being conducted by the Rev. J. N. McGee, Presbyterian minister, Cooma. The pall bearers were the Messrs Eric Weston, James, Henry and Reginald McGufficke, and wreaths were contributed by the Nolan family (Springmore), Aunt Helen, Mrs R. Jardine (Nitholm), All at Brookfield, Mrs Brooks and family, Killarney, the Oliver family, Percy and Queen Brooks, and Miss Ellen McGregor. Ms J. F. Allen carried out the funeral arrangements.
The deceased, who lived a quiet life, was a widower, and was the eldest son of the late Mr James McGufficke, of Kelton Bank. He was born at Braidwood, and came to Coolringdon when five years of age, with his parents. He married Miss Catherine Oliver at Berridale, when in his 27th year, and took up grazing pursuits and lived at Moonbah, which property he owned, for the lengthy period of 46 years. He was of the hardy pioneer type, and could relate many incidents of the time when communication between Manaro and Sydney was by bullock team.
He is survived by his brother, Mr John McGufficke, Moonbah; and sisters, Mrs Daniel McGregor, Brookfield ; Mrs Robert Jardine, of Nitholm, Cooma; and Mrs F. Mould, of Adaminaby ; a son, Mr John McGufficke, of Flisk Milan, Jindabyne ; a daughter, Mrs W. Weston, of Jindabyne, and four grandchildren.
