- Notes: William Winter (1826 – 1915) actually had nothing to do with Buckingham Palace. My great-uncle Edward Kevin Gallagher thought this story was true and promulgated it, but the reality is more likely to be that William Winter came from Haddenham in Buckinghamshire, about 30 miles NW of London. This is verified from his immigration record. I also I visited his parents’ common marked gravestone in the Baptist burial ground at Haddenham in July 1995. Also, William was born in 1828 according to his immigration record. Apart from my great-uncle Kevin’s tale (which he told to a great many people) I have seen not any evidence that William was a carpenter at Buckingham Palace, or that he was born there. I think whoever invented the story may have seized on the “Buckingham” part of his birth shire. I think it is well verified, however, that William Winter built the Carrington Hotel in Bungendore. My great-uncle Kevin also told me that William Winter’s mother’s maiden name was Collingridge, per your records. But I never found any confirmation of this, although most of my family research was done before the availability of family history data on the internet, so it might be out there somewhere.
