| - Notes: MR. BENJAMIN DAY
The death occurred at the Tumut and District Hospital on Saturday, 24th December, of another of Tumut's grand old men in the person of Mr. Benjamin Day, of Mondongo. A man of virility all his life, he continued with his work up to when he contracted a chill some time ago. The chill developed into a severe attack attack of 'flu and it was some days before Mr. Day consulted a doctor, who advised him to go to bed immediately. His condition became worse and he was admitted with pneumonia to the Tumut and District Hospital. Despite careful nursing and medical attention Mr. Day passed away on the Saturday. Deceased was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Day, very early settlers of the Tumut district. Mr. Jas. Day came out from England to Tumut before there was any actual town. He remembered a bark hut where the Bank of N.S.W. now stands as the only building in the present town. There were a few structures near the flour mill, adjacent to the Showground. In the year 1887 the subject of this obituary married Margaret, the eldest daughter of the late Jas. Kell, of Lacmalac, and they took up residence at Mondongo, where they resided all the rest of his life. Besides his widow, there are four sons (Walter Jas., Roland, John and William) and two daughters — Anne (Mrs. G. Sturt, of Tumut Plains) and Sylvia (Mrs. Fred. Piper) — surviving. There is one daughter (Margaret) deceased, Mr. George Day, of Yarrangobilly Caves, is a brother. There are also three sisters. The funeral took place on Xmas Day, after a short service in St. Stephen's Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Donald M. Baird. The pallbearers were Messrs. Walter, Roland, John and William Day (sons) and Messrs. George Sturt and Fred. Piper (sons-in-law). The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. C. W. Burt.
