BRIDGET HALLORAN nee O'Farrell
by Lyn Shiels Bridget was born in 1833 in County Clare, lneland. She came to Australia in 1854 on the ship Victory with her husband Patrick. They landed in Western Australia believing that a day or two's ride would bring them to other parts of the colony. The revelation of how far away the rest of Australian settlement actually was must have been a shock. They remained in West Australia for three years and a child was born there. ln March 1857 they set sail for the eastern states but the ship took much longer than expected to make the journey, food supplies ran very low and passengers and crew were starving. They were rescued by being able to swap wood for food with another ship. Bridget came ashore in Adelaide, supposedly to await the birth of another child and Patrick continued to Melbourne on the coastal ship Nonpareil. The Nonpareil was wrecked on the Port Lonsdale Reef on the night of October 13. Most of ihe passengers and crew were rescued the next morning but through a misunderstanding Patrick's name was left off the list of survivors and for some time Bridget believed that he had died. Her distress in a strange town and country, pregnant and with a small child to care for can only be imagined. Later a letter came from Patrick asking her to join him. After this dramatic period six years were spent in Victoria and eveniually the family came to Tumut and settled at Tumut Plains and :hen Blowering. More children were born bringing the family to twelve children. Farming provid'ed the family with a good living and there was an extended family as two of Patrick's brothers and a sister also lived in the area. Bridget's life was centred on her home, family and church. She was a skilled midwife and assisted at the birth of many Blowering children' Patrick died in 1900 and Bridget continued to live in the tamity home until her death in 1923 at the venerable age of 90 years. She is buried in the Tumut Pioneer Cemetery. Adelong and Tumut Express 18 May 1923 Obituary MRS. P. HALLORAN Sr. Expressions of sincere regret were expressed throughout the district at the death of Mrs. P. Halloran sr. Mrs. Bridget Halloran has been associated with Blowering almost from the beginning. On her arrival in Australia, with her husband and family, there was little or nothing done, the place being a bush. The flats have since been turned into fields of agriculture. One of the finest mountain roads in the Commonwealth runs along with an endless stream of water in the Tumut River. The buggy and sulky have nearly passed away. Tumut has grown from a scattered village into a fine town during the period of the subject of this notice lifetime here. The port in Western Australia (Albany), where Mr. and Mrs. Halloran landed, had two hotels. It has now modern wharfs and palacial city edifices. From there to the goldfields of Victoria, and then to Tumut district, is a big step. From a scattered population to a young Commonwealth is a life's journey indeed. During that period Mrs. Halloran faced every difficulty with a cheerful heart and kindly disposition. Her chief delight was to be at home. With her death, another of the brave pioneers passes — one of the women who helped to lay the foundation-stones of Australia, deep and strong. To all members of her family, especially Miss Mary Halloran (who for the past five years has had to pay almost hourly attention to her mother), and Miss Maggie Halloran (who for the past six months has assisted) we offer our sincere sympathy. The members of he family living are Patrick, Thomas, John, Frank (three sons), Miss Mary, Mrs. Hayes (Sydney), Miss M. Halloran (Sydney), Mrs. W. Kell (Lacmalac), Mrs. R. L. Blakeney, Sister Jane Francis (Bridget), St. Joseph, Mount-St. N. Sydney. The Tumut and Adelong Times 18 May 1923 Deaths The death occurred on Tuesday evening, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. R. L. Blakeney, of Mrs. Bridget Halloran, relict of the late P. Halloran, of Blowering, Tumut. Her age was 90 years. The aged lady had been declining for some time past, as the result of senile decay, no particular ailment being apparent. About a fortnight ago she was brought to Tumut, in order to be in loser touch with her medical and spiritual advisers. The latter gave her every attention, and she was regularly visited by Frs. Sharkey, Devine and Kinane, and the sisters of the Convent. She was a particularly devout churchwoman. The late Mrs. Halloran was a native of County Clare, Ireland, where she was married to her late husband, and they came to Australia some 70 years ago, settling in West Australia, South Australia, Victoria, and finally reached Tumut, N.S.W. The family is an old pioneering one as far as Tumut is concerned, and Mrs. Halloran has been residing at the homestead at Blowering for many years. She was the mother of a large family, namely :— Frank, Thomas, Patrick and John, and Miss Mary (Blowering), Mrs. Hayes and Miss M. Haloran (Sydney), Mrs. W. Kell (Lacmalac), Mrs. R. L. Blakeney (Tumut), and Sister Jane Frances (of the Sisteis of St. Joseph, Mount-st., North Sydney. The body was taken to the Church on Wednesday, the funeral leaving for the old cemetery at 3.30 p.m., the remains being interred alongside those of her late husband. Rev. Frs. Sharkey and Kinane officiated at the graveside, and Mr. H. W. Baker was the undertaker. On Wednesday night, at 11 p.m., there passed away another member of Tumut's oldest pioneering families, in the person of Mr. James McNamara, at the age of 78 years. For the past couple of years the old man had been going down hill, but until quite recently was able to get about fairly comfortably. The cause of death was heart failure. Deceased was born at Yass, and was the second eldest of a large family, the members of which were:— John, Thomas, James (the subject of this obituary), Michael, Hugh, George, and Miss Annie and Miss Mary. It is strange that John, the eldest, whose age is 81 years, is the only one still living, but he is also feeble in health. About 31 years ago the subject of this obituary married Miss Mary Downing, daughter of the late Mrs. Rebecca Downing, late of the Star Hotel, Tumut. The issue of the marriage was 9 children— seven of whom are living, viz., —James, John, Mary, Florence, Ethel Hugh, and Annie. On Sunday last the late Mr. McNamara took ill, and had been confined to his bed since then, with an attack similar to other previous ones. This time, however, the heart failed, the temperature having lowered to 30 degrees. Drs. Browne and Clouston had been attending him during the few days previous to his death. The funeral will take place this afternoon, for the R.C. portion of the new cemetery. |
