Personal Notes:
The Tumut and Adelong Times 3 Nov 1911
DEATH.
On Monday morning last Mr. C. Brown passed peacefully away at his late residence, at the northern end of the town. Deceased was one of the old pioneers of the town, having come to Adelong at the time of what is known as the second rush in the fifties; he had therefore been a resident of the place for over 50 years. Deceased was born in Norway in 1836, and was therefore 75 years of age at his death. He followed the calling of a sailor in his young days, and abandoned the sea life for the excitement of the gold miner, at which calling he did well, and being of a very steady disposition, took care of the gold he won, built a comfortable home (which he improved with a splendid orchard and garden), and spent his latter days in peace and comfort. Deceased was a good citizen, and in his younger days took an active part in all matters pertaining to the progress and welfare of the town. He was one of the oldest members of the Golden Age Lodge, M.U. Oddfellows, joining just after the lodge was started and remaining good until the day of his death. For many years he was a conspicuous figure in the sporting and social world, his jovial manner and affability mak- ing him friends with everybody. Deceased was twice married, and reared a large family of sons and daughters, all of whom are grown up and settled in life. Two wives pre-deceased the subject of our obituary, three children having been born by the first and four by the second. We tender to the survivors sincerest sympathy over their sad bereavement. The funeral took place on Tuesday, and was largely attended. Numerous wreaths were placed on the coffin by friends and sympathisers. The Rev. H. E. Lewin (Church of England) read the burial service. Messrs. Boston Bros., as nndertakers, conducted the funeral arrangements in a pleasing manner.
