The Sydney Morning Herald Wednesday 13 July 1932:
ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD TRAGEDY SOLVED. COOMA, Tuesday. The mysterious disappearance of an old age pensioner, more than 11 years ago, was partly explained to-day, when the district coroner (Mr. H. Solomon) held an Inquiry at Cooma into the finding of human bones about two miles from Jerangle. Evidence was given that Dwyer Doyle, the postmaster at Jerangle, while shooting in the bush with three other men, noticed a pair of old boots and some bones near a tree. He informed Constable Grogan, who accompanied him to the spot and found a metal watch and portions of clothing, a pipe, matches, spectacles, and a small bottle containing dry crystals. Other evidence was that, in January 1921, an old-age pensioner. Charles Chalker, 78, appeared deranged and told his wife that he was going away and would not be found alive. The watch found was similar to that carried by Chalker, who, before leaving home, had broken up with an axe various articles of furniture. Doctor Utber, Government Medical Officer, said that the bones were those of an old man. The bottle found contained strychnine. He was unable to form an opinion as to the cause of death. The coroner found that the remains, apparently, were those of Charles Chalker, who evidently had died between January 1921 and July 1922, but the evidence adduced did not enable him to find the cause of death. |
