Monaro Mercury, and Cooma and Bombala Advertiser 19 May 1916
Death of Mr. C. Woodhouse. A MANARO PIONEER. Mr. Charles Woodhouse, an old Manaro resident, died some what suddenly yesterday at his home, Gegedzerick Station, Berridale, the cause of death being heart failure. He had been medically attended for an affection of the heart for some months and was fully aware of the weak condition of that organ; having been taken ill towards the end of last month. On Wednesday he was at Jindabyne where he stayed that night at the house of a friend, returning to his home yesterday morning. He drove from Jindabyne, and upon arrival said he was tired from the trip, and was resting when he suddenly became weak and expired. The news of his death came as a shock to many who had seen him in his usual condition of health only a short while before his decease. He was 75 years of age, having been born at Paupong on 4th August 1841. He commenced life without financial assistance, and from thrift and perseverance acquired some valuable properties. He had lived at Gegedzerick for nearly 30 years, having previously owned properties at Rocky Plain and Grosse's Plain. He also acquired the Cowwarr and Heyfield Estates in the Gippsland district of Victoria, which he sold some few years since; and at the time of his death held an interest in Grosse's Plain and Moonbah properties. The deceased was in his younger days a noted horseman and for a number of years bred blood horses, of which he was an excellent judge. He owned the sires Kilfera and Royal Steel, and the Clydesdale Pride of Salisbury, and was a keen racing sportsman, being a regular attendant at the district meetings of Manaro. He was present at the Cooma race meeting held in the early part of the month and was then in his usual state of health. Mrs. Woodhouse pre-deceased him, some few years since. He leaves three sons, viz., Messrs. Amos James Woodhouse, George William Woodhouse, and Edward Crisp Woodhouse, and three daughters, Mesdames H. Scarlett, A. Tickle, and G. Clarke. His youngest brother Mr. Richard Woodhouse lives at Ingebyra Station; his eldest brother being Mr. James Woodhouse, living at Gippsland, and who is over four score years of age. The funeral will take place at the Gegedzerick cemetery on Saturday afternoon. |
