The Tumut and Adelong Times 19 Mar 1929
DEATH OF MR. DANIEL WILES The passing of Mr. Daniel Wiles on Wednesday last bereft Adelong of one of its most highly respected citizens. Born here 61 years ago, he has resided with us practically ever since, and was esteemed and respected by all who knew him, and his friends were legion. For some time he has had very bad health, and all the time was tenderly nursed by his devnted wife. Practically all his life he was a miner, and few there were who understood quartz mining better than he. Like so many others who took an active part in mining, he got dust on the lungs, and that was really responsible for his death at a comparatively early age for so strong a man as he was before being affected by the dust particles. Always quiet, he had many bosom friends, and was always the same true friend to all. When a young man he married Miss Mary Farrell, and, together, they have reared a large family, the youngest now being twelve years of age. Their children had the benefit of a good early training from both mother and father, and deeply mourn the loss of their good parent. The death of Mr. Wiles recalls a particularly sad accident which occurred at the Gibraltar Mines many years ago, when Mr. Arthur Tillet lost his life. He was mates with Mr. Wiles, and they were exploring over an old stull, which suddenly collopsed, and carried Mr. Tillet with the rush of mullock on the stull right down into a pass, where he was covered by hundreds of tons of broken granite. Mr. Wiles was the first to give the alarm, and with others worked till nearly midnight before the body was recovered. The shock of losing his mate was a ter rible blow for Mr. Wiles, and the other mate, Mr. Donnellan. Besides a sorrowing widow, the children left to mourn are: William (Queensland), Mrs. McGilvray (Gundagai), Aubrey (Taree) , Daniel (Queensland), Miss Julia (Adelong), Vincent (Harden), Thomas, John, Joseph, Kathleen, Reginald (Adelong). The remains were laid to rest in the Adelong Cemetery on Thursday last, Rev. T. Collins conducting the last sad rites. |
