Personal Notes: |
David was the third child and first son of ten children born to Jane Campbell and David Hannah. He was born at Stockyard Hill near Beaufort in Victoria before the family moved to Cowabee station near Coolamon in NSW. He also had a half-brother, Robert John Hannah and half-sister Catherine Hannah by his father’s first marriage but would not have known them that well as they both had died before he was 8 years old.
His father, David Hannah Snr and his two uncles made the decision to move north from Victoria to the Riverina in NSW with his grandmother, Jane Hannah. David Hannah Snr and his family took up full time residence at Cowabee Station near Coolamon in NSW, probably late in 1875 when David was about 5 years old. The first homestead at Cowabee Station was a slab hut, and the second more comfortable homestead was built in 1882. The original slab hut was then used for visitor accommodation. Among those who worked for David Hannah Snr at Cowabee was Donald Cameron, an itinerant carpenter and builder. His daughter Mary accompanied him as a ten year old in 1875. Later as Dame Mary Gilmore she would recount stories of mistreatment of aborigines there much to the mortification of David Hannah’s descendants, who with hindsight readily admitted to paternalism but never to physical maltreatment of aborigines on Cowabee. This would become the subject of some heated correspondence between David Hannah’s son in law, George Gow and Dame Mary Gilmore, very little of which still survives. Dame Mary Gilmore face is featured on the current Australian $10 note. She is buried in the Cloncurry cemetery. Catherine Hannah, David’s half-sister died in April 1876 almost aged 12 when David was 6 years old from typhoid fever. In September 1878, his half-brother Robert Hannah died when he was about 8 years also from typhoid fever. In July 1885, when he was 15 years old, his grandmother died, and she is also buried at Cowabee Station. In October 1888, his uncle Thomas Hannah died when he was 18 years old, and he also is buried at the Cowabee Cemetery. Nothing is known of his schooling or early life at Cowabee. He worked for his father on Cowabbie station prior to his father's death. His father, David Hannah Snr, died of typhoid on 23rd March 1890 at Cowabee Station aged about 54 years, when David Hannah Jnr was 20 years old. His father is buried at the cemetery at Cowabee Station along with half sister Catherine Hannah, half-brother Robert Hannah, his grandmother Jane Hannah and his uncle Thomas Hannah. David Hannah Jnr being the oldest son then had to run the property for his mother and his sisters who were all still living at home. The property consisted of some 30,000 acres freehold. It was a sheep and grazing property. When he was married, he and his wife also would have lived at “Cowabbie”. The Hannah family continued in occupation of Cowabee Station until 1907 even though the lease had passed from Jane Hannah to Dalgety and Company in 1895. Cowabee Station was sold on the 1/1/1907 with a clearing sale held on the 1/3/1907 of stock, plant and furniture. The total area of the station was 30,049 acres. It was subdivided into 34 farms for closer settlement. This was the era of the break up of the sheep stations of the Riverina for wheat farms. He died on 17 Apr 1930 at Clermont, Qld, Australia, aged 59. He was buried on the 18th April 1930 at Clermont Cemetery, Qld, Australia. From the Morning Bulletin (Rockhampton), Qld, Saturday 26 April 1930 MR. D. HANNAH. The news of the unexpected death of Mr. David Hannah, at Kilcummin, on Thursday week last, came as a painful shock, writes our Clermont correspondent. Only three days before Mr. Hannah arrived home, passing through Clermont on the way out and he seemed to be in good health. It is understood that Mr. Hannah had been out all day on Thursday with the manager at Kilcummin, Mr. F. A. Tooth, and returned at six o'clock at night. When about to get ready for dinner he was suddenly seen by Mrs. Hannah to have a seizure, and his passing was only a matter of minutes. Dr. Meiklc was at once sent for, and on arrival certified the cause of death to be acute dilation of the heart. The funeral took place on Good Friday from All Saints' Church, and was largely attended, the Rev. G. E Wheeler officiating at the church and at the graveside. Mr. Hannah was a prominent figure in pastoral circles. He joined the service of the Australian Estates and Mortgage Company in 1908 as manager of their Jemalong Station, in New South Vales, transferring to Cambridge Downs in 1914 and the following year accepted the appointment of pastoral inspector. In addition, he was recently appointed inspector for Mr. Edmond Towctt's stations, holding the position till the time of his death. He was a practical man in all branches of the industry and at one time owned Cowabbie Station, in New South Wales, which he eventually sold for closer settlement purposes. His death is a loss to the pastoral industry, and he will be missed by the station staff. |
