Personal Notes:
The Tumut and Adelong Times 21 Sep 1926
OBITUARY MR. D. McLEAN, SENR. Mr. Donald McLean, senior, who was found dead in his bed at the Exchange Hotel, Murrumburrah, last Sunday week, was in his normal state of health on the previous day, and showed no sign of any serious illness. On two occasions, however, he had strokes, but there was recently no sign of any such thing occurring again. The late Mr. McLean was 76 years of age, and a native of Moreton Park, Campbelltown. He left that place when quite a young man, and settled in the Gundagai district, being engaged in farming at Snowball and Jones' Creek, and later on in the butchering business in Gundagai town. For 40 years he was a resident of that district, and took a great interest in all matters that tended to promote the welfare and progress of Gundagai. He was one of the founders of the Gundagai P. A. and I. Association, and one of its first committeemen, doing much to ensure the success of the show. He also took a keen interest in horse racing, and was for many years starter to the Gundagai racing club. Besides these two bodies mentioned, he took a leading part in most public affairs, and was a man whose opinion carried considerable weight and whose sterling worth earned him universal respect amongst those with whom he lived for so many years. He left Gundagai 14 years ago and went to Harden, where he lived a retired life, but nevertheless earned the highest respect and esteem of all who knew him. His sons and daughters numbered seven, of whom six survive him, viz: Mr. D. A. McLean (Grand Hotel,, Harden), Mr. D. I. McLean, junr (Exchange Hotel, Murrumburrah), Mr. Lachlan McLean (Queensland), Mrs. A. Hargreaves, (Sydney), Mrs. E. E. Reid (Murrumburrah), and Miss Tena McLean (Murrumburrah). The other son, Mr. Jack McLean (of Yass), died some years ago. Mr. John McLean, of Gundagai, is a surviving brother, and Mrs. McInerney (Moreton Park) and Mrs. Colmer (New England), are sisters. Deceased's sisters are Mrs. Turner (Tumblong), and Mrs. Prowse (View Point, Cootamundra.). The funeral, which took place on Monday of last week, was largely attended, and many beautiful wreaths were placed on the coffin, including several from Gundagai, one being from the president of the shire of Gundagai. The Rev. S. L. McKenzie officiated at the funeral, holding a short service at the house, also at the graveside.

This public tree has about 60,100 people. Every person in the tree is related by birth or marriage to at least one other person in the tree - no strays. The people in the tree come mainly from four projects.
  1. My family tree. The original project begun about 1998. ID numbers less than about 6,000
  2. Canberra and Queanbeyan Pioneers. The next 30,000 begun about 2004. Sourced almost entirely from HAGSOC's excellent 'Biographical Register of Canberra and Queanbeyan'. The project began when I decided to add siblings, spouses and parents for a relation with an entry in the Register. 12 years work.
  3. Wagga Pioneers. I moved to Wagga and thought I would extend the Queanbeyan project by adding people from Wagga Wagga & District Family History Society's 'Pioneers of Wagga Wagga and District'. About 10,300 people added over about a year.
  4. Tumut Valley Pioneers. During the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, I decided to extend the above projects by adding pioneers of the Tumut Valley. Initial sources were Snowden's 'Pioneers of the Tumut Valley' and 'Relict of ... Lives of Pioneering Women of Tumut and District'. Excellent references published by Tumut Family History Group. I've also added material from newspapers of the time - especially, death records, obituaries and weddings from 'Tumut and Adelong Times'. This project is in its early stage and might take a few years. I plan to extend to the upper Monaro (Adaminaby, Kiandra, Cooma, Jindabyne).
I upload new information to this website about every 3 months. My motivation for these projects is to provide public information for people seeking to trace ancestors and what became of them. Much of the information I provide can be difficult to find.
If you find errors - anything incorrect (dates, places, wrong parents, wrong children), and you have evidence, I would love to fix them. Or, if you have information that would extend my projects, do not hestiate to contact me on the email link below. I do not publish information on living people - which means I'm not much interested in people born after about 1920, and I usually distrust material from before about 1770 without extremely good sources.
