Personal Notes:
Sid was born on 18 December 1899 at Humula, NSW, to parents Richard Sandford Fawcett and Clara Florence Shoemark[1]. He grew up with three siblings on the family farm at Humula.

On 14 July 1915, Sid enlisted into the Australian Imperial Forces at Liverpool, NSW. He lied about his age and was discharged a week later at his parent's request. He had to make the trek from Sydney back down to Coreinbob[2].

He then joined the Navy in 1915 and spent 12 months training on the Tingara and Cerberus. The following article was in the Wagga Wagga Express on Thu 10 Aug 1916[3]:

PERSONAL

"One of our naval boys has been visiting Wagga on final leave this week, Od. C. R. Fawcett, only son of Mr. R. S. Fawcett, of Coreinbob, Wagga. After twelve months on the Tingara and Cerberus, this lad, who though a fine sturdy youth, and still in his teens, has been ordered on service-abroad with the Royal Navy.

As the naval activities are at present in the North Sea, and the Australian unit is there, that probably is his destination. We have numbers of men in the amy from this district, but few representatives in the navy so the district will be proud to know that one at least of its boys will be on duty on one of the largest fighting boats afloat.

The father is justly proud of his sailor son, one of the brightest lads to have enlisted from here, and a trophy he prizes most is one Cyril won in a lifebuoy swimming event, a distance of 200 yards in the open sea. Cyril, looking the picture of health in his naval uniform, leaves today."

He served until 1921 and trained and worked on the HMAS Tingira. He then moved back home to Coreinbob.

By 1926 Sid was living at Mittagong. He was having an affair with his Uncle's wife Ivy Irene Angel. She had Sid's daughter Peggy on 28 Jul 1927 at Bowral, NSW[4].

His Uncle Alfred Shoemark died on 14 April 1927 at Wagga Wagga from Typhoid Fever and Cyril married Ivy on 29 May 1930 at St Stephen's Rectory, Mittagong[5]. They settled at Rosedale, Berrima Road, Mittagong in 1930 and then in 1931, they settled at Cemetery Road, Fitzroy[6].

In 1931 Sid was elected to the new Axeman's Club committee at Mittagong[7].

Sid and Ivy had 3 children together after they married - Doreen Brenda, Robert Colin, and Richard Carlyle.

On 11 August 1941, Sid enlisted into the Army at Paddington (13th Garrison Bn). A week later, he absconded from Port Kembla and walked the 70kms back to Fitzroy whilst mentally unwell. Sergeant A.C. Herrington visited Sid and Ivy and made a report back to the Garrison[8]. Sid was discharged with paraphrenia (mental illness) two months later and discharged medically unfit. He spent much of that time on sick leave[9].

Sid was too mentally unwell to work again, and according to his daughter Peggy, he didn't leave their yard until he died. On 29 May 1944, he died at home from suicide[10]. He was buried the next day at the Welby General Cemetery, Welby, NSW
