Personal Notes:

Davrd Crampton106 was born in Panamatta NSW in 1835 and came to Tumut in 1852 where in 1854 he married Augusta Drew. David and Augusta (and her parents) had travelled from Sydney in the same party.

David was a gold miner and worked in many fields including Reedy Flat, Poverty Gully, Lacmalac and Argalong. Later he bought a block of land for £1 in Tumut. (at a Government land sale) Where he ran a butcher’s shop with Mr. Murphy. It was in this same building where later Tom Castro opened the London Butchery.

Tom Castro was the assumed name of Arthur Orton who claimed to be the wealthy (and missing) Roger Tichbome. His trial created worldwide interest in the 1860’s. A London newspaper journalist reflected “We have all suddenly became familiar with Australian geography, and talk glibly of Gundagai, and Gipsland and Tumut." The trial made Wagga Wagga a very well known name in England.

The pioneers, David and Augusta Crampton lived for many years in their own cottage in Simpson Street, Newtown, Tumut. Augusta died in January 1908 and David died in March 1922.

MR. DAVID CRAMPTON Sr.
By the death of Mr. David Crampton sr, which occurred at his son's (Sydney) residence, Newtown, Tumut, on Monday, March 20, Tumut loses one of the few pioneers of the old brigade, and one who left his mark in this district. He was born at Parramatta in 1832, and was trained to the butchering business being the first man here to sell meat over the counter.
The funeral took place on Wednesday, March 22, the remains being laid to rest in the Church of England portion of the new cemetery at Tumut, Rev. A. G. Rix officiating as minister and Ald.Jas. Elphick directing. Six grandsons (Harold, Stanley Crampton, Alfred and Arthur Lefevre, and Herb and Reg Crampton) acted as pallbearers. Deceased had reached the advanced age of 89 years and nine months.
