By request no flowers. DEATH OF MR. E. W. MOLESWORTH. The death at Lindfield, early on Saturday morning, of Mr. Edmund William Molesworth, of Flndlay-avenue, Chatawood, removes a well-known figure from city commerclal circles. For many years he had carried on a large Customs-house agency, and was formerly in partnership with the lato Mr. George Wall, the business being carried on under the name of Wall and Molesworth, customs-house agents, of Loftus-street, city. After the dis- solution of that partnership, Mr. Molesworth opened a similar business in O'Connoll-Street, which he carried on up to the time of his death. Deceased, who was In his 76th year, enjoyed robust health until comparatively re- cently, and personally conducted business up to his 76th birthday. Mr. Molesworth was born in Banbury, England, and was only three years of ago when he landed with his parents in Sydney. His father died when the young colonist was only 13, and, having to make his way in life with but little outside help, he developed those powers of resource and initiative which en- abled him to reach success in the buslness world. In 1889 the late Mr. Molesworth was elected to Parliament as one of the four re- presentatives of Newtown, and was re-elected in 1891. When that constituency was divided into single electorates he was elected in the next Parliament of 1894 to represent Ers- kineville, and continued to hold that seat after the elections of July, 1895, and July, 1898. He was held in high esteem by his constituents during the thirteen years he re- presented Newtown and Erskineville, and was a keen freetrader and one of the most loyal supporters of Mr. George Reid's Ministry from 1894 to 1899. It was in Church work that the late Mr. Molesworth particularly directed his energies, and he has left a fine record of quiet achieve- ment. His connection with St. Stephen's, Newtown, lasted for over 30 years, and as trea- surer of the building fund he was actively associated with assisting the finances of that church. He was a member of Synod, being chairman of committees in Synod, and chair- man of the standing committee. Amongst other positions held by Mr. Molesworth In Church life were St. Stephen's Sunday school superintendency, member of St. Philip's (Globe) trust, and trustee of Camperdown Cemetery. Latterly he had been identified with St. Paul's Church, Chatswood. Mr. Moleswoith is survived by a widow and a large adult family-Dr. E. H. Molesworth, of Macquarie-strcet, Dr. Cecil Molesworth (Nowra), Mr. Sydney Molesworth (Griffith). Mrs. Howe, wife of tho Rev. H. G. J. Howe (Gladesville), Mrs. Madsen, wife of Dr. J. P. V Madsen, Mis. F. E. Babbage, of Roseville, and Mrs. C. Vautin (Melbourne) The funeral will take place at Gore Hill Cemetery this afternoon. |
