The Tumut Advocate 8 Aug 1911
Obituary. MR. EDWARD VICKERY. The death ocourred at his residence, Tumut Plains, on Sunday morning at 12.30 a.m. of Mr. Edward Vickery, at the age of 68 years. Deceased was a native of Somersetshire, England, and came out here with his father (Mrs W. Vickery) when only 14 years of age and settled down in Camden. Subsequently he came to the Tumut district and married the late widow of Mr. Johnathon Regent. As the issue of that union he had three daughters (Mrs. H. McAlister, Tumut, Mrs. H. Bird, of Maitland, and the late Mrs W. Lusty). Some few years after deceased married Miss Hannah Elizabeth Lord, daughter of Mr. John and Mary Ann. Lord, of West Maitland, and resided for some years at Bombowlee, thence moved to his home at Tumut Plains, where for many years he has followed pastoral and agricultural pursuits. Deceased had four brothers and two sisters, all of whom predeceased him except one sister (Mrs. W. Burgess, of West Maitland). As is generally known locally, some three years ago the subject of our obituary, suffering from that dreaded disease senile gangrene, journeyed to Sydney to seek medical advice and was informed his case was hopeless. Thence he repaired home and went again under treatment by our local Doctors Mason and Brown, who considered the only hope of retaining the vital spark was for deceased to undergo an operation and have one leg amputated. This operation was successfully performed, and, within a very short space of time it was found necessary to perform a similar operation on the other leg, which again proved successful, and the patient improved in health, and for the last 2½ years looked hale; and strong up to the time he again took bad a while back, when he became partially paralyzed which continued to spread until the poor sufferer could only move his head. Prior to becoming paralyzed in one side and arm and losing consciousness deceased named all those near and dear to him, throwing out his hand with what little strength he had on mentioning each name, and concluded by uttering : "Peace, perfect peace, rest for us all, Heaven, glorious Heaven!" And it is felt that his trials, sorrows and cares of this world have been transformed into peace and everlasting happiness at rest with God beyond. Deceased was highly and universally esteemed, and was most conscientious and honorable in all his aotions, a kind and indulgent father, devoted and fond husband. He leaves behind him five step-daughters, two step-sons and two daughters by the first marriage, and by the last marriage six sons and a sorrowing wife to mourn their irreparable loss. Mrs. Vickery, throughput all deceased's sickness nursed him with a kindness and unremitting attention, and truly it was not possible for a wife to do more than she has done. Numerous wreaths, floral tributes and messages of condolence were received. The funeral took place yesterday, a large cortege of friends paying their last sad tribute of respect. The Rev. Ross-Edwards officiated at the grave, and Mr. H. Hoad carried out the undertaking arrangements. We tender the bereaved our deepest sympathy in this their time of sore affliction.

This public tree has about 60,100 people. Every person in the tree is related by birth or marriage to at least one other person in the tree - no strays. The people in the tree come mainly from four projects.
  1. My family tree. The original project begun about 1998. ID numbers less than about 6,000
  2. Canberra and Queanbeyan Pioneers. The next 30,000 begun about 2004. Sourced almost entirely from HAGSOC's excellent 'Biographical Register of Canberra and Queanbeyan'. The project began when I decided to add siblings, spouses and parents for a relation with an entry in the Register. 12 years work.
  3. Wagga Pioneers. I moved to Wagga and thought I would extend the Queanbeyan project by adding people from Wagga Wagga & District Family History Society's 'Pioneers of Wagga Wagga and District'. About 10,300 people added over about a year.
  4. Tumut Valley Pioneers. During the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, I decided to extend the above projects by adding pioneers of the Tumut Valley. Initial sources were Snowden's 'Pioneers of the Tumut Valley' and 'Relict of ... Lives of Pioneering Women of Tumut and District'. Excellent references published by Tumut Family History Group. I've also added material from newspapers of the time - especially, death records, obituaries and weddings from 'Tumut and Adelong Times'. This project is in its early stage and might take a few years. I plan to extend to the upper Monaro (Adaminaby, Kiandra, Cooma, Jindabyne).
I upload new information to this website about every 3 months. My motivation for these projects is to provide public information for people seeking to trace ancestors and what became of them. Much of the information I provide can be difficult to find.
If you find errors - anything incorrect (dates, places, wrong parents, wrong children), and you have evidence, I would love to fix them. Or, if you have information that would extend my projects, do not hestiate to contact me on the email link below. I do not publish information on living people - which means I'm not much interested in people born after about 1920, and I usually distrust material from before about 1770 without extremely good sources.
