Re Elizabeth Vincent of Wagga Wagga
I don’t believe there is any basis for her being called Elizabeth SHORTIS Vincent Do you have any primary source that uses the SHORTIS name? She died 15 April 1886 Obituary in The Wagga Wagga Advertiser Saturday April 17 1886 Mrs Vincent of Rock Cottage, on the Lake Albert road, and a very old resident, died on Thursday morning last, and was buried yesterday at the Wesleyan cemetery, Wagga, the funeral service being conducted the Rev W Hill. The deceased arrived in the colony with her husband and four children in the year 1839. After a short residence in Sydney they moved to the interior, and for some years resided at Mittagong station near Yerong. At this place the late Mr Vincent died, nearly forty years ago, and some years ago his remains were brought to their present resting place in the Wagga Cemetery, by the side of which the coffin of the deceased lady was yesterday placed. There was a large attendance at the funeral, and there would have been more but for the threatening aspect of the weather. Mrs Vincent would have been 80 years of age had she lived till June. I believe the best evidence of her birth is the obituary above so I would list date of birth as June 1806 I had some correspondence with the registrar of BDMs in Sydney some decades ago, but although I was certain, I couldn’t convince them that she died in 1886 and not 1887 as the records show. I gave up in frustration as I knew what was true. |

Then in 1863 her son Demas Vincent, aged 26, was killed in a horse accident. Closely followed in 1863 by bushranger Dan Morgan holding up and burning Mittagong station. Then the next year her grand-daughter was killed playing with fire at Mittagong. |
