The Tumut and Adelong Times 20 May 1910
Death of Mrs. G. Morton. We sincerely regret having to record the death of that old and respected resident, Mrs. G. Morton, which occurred at Bombowlee Creek, on Tuesday last, after an illness lasting over the past couple of months, during which period she was under the care of Drs. Mason and Browne, who did all in their power to prolong life, and undoubtedly did much in that direction. The old lady's illness may be said to have dated back to last Christmas, although it was not until March last that the ailment took such a turn for it to be demed necessary to obtain medical advice. Dr. Browne then attended the patient, and the case under the care of that doctor and his partner, Dr. Mason, seemed to be progressing well towards recovery, when an apoplectic stroke affecting the left leg and side occurred, and from that paralysis became developed. The necessary remedies were prescribed, and proved efficacious up to Tuesday last, when a collapse occurred. Deceased was the daughter of the late Mr. Wm. Piper (one of the first settlers in these districts), and was born at Jerara, near Marulan, in the year, 1840, thus she had reached her 70th year. When 8 years old she came with her parents to Tumut, and they after residing for some time at Wyangle, built and occupied the residence now leased by Mr. P. McGrath, where, 50 years ago the object of our obituary notice was married to Mr. George Morton, the Rev. P. Fitzgerald performing the ceremony. The newly married couple took up their abode in the home at Bombowlee Creek, which has been occupied by them ever since, and they were looking forward to celebrating their Golden Wedding day there on 14th August next; but Fate willed it otherwise, and one of the fondest of wives and kindest of mothers known to exist in our neighbourhood has been removed, leaving a devoted and sorrowing husband and grown-up family to lament the sad bereavement that has occurred. The symptoms of affection shown by survivors towards the deceased gave unmistaken signs of the love they bore towards her— it was more marked than that of any previous occurrence of the kind that has happened in this district. She leaves to mourn her loss with sorrow, a grief -stricken husband, four sons and three daughters, their names being— sons, David P. Morton (Temora), and James Morton (late of Wagga)— both married — James Morton, and Francis Morton; daughters, Mrs. Aaron Keenan (Batlow), Mrs. John Keenan (Kornulburra, Vic.) and Miss Nina Agnes Morton (residing at home); also 21 grandchildren. Two sons and a daughter — Messrs. George and John Morton and Mrs. J. Harris (Sandy Creek) pre-deceased their mother. The funeral, on Wednesday last, was very numerously attended, thus showing the respect and esteem in which the deceased was held by a wide circle of friends; the cortage was fully half a mile long when it passed through the town. Rev. Davies (Presbyterian) performed the last sad rites at the grave, and Mr. J. Elphick carried out the undertaker's duties. Adelong and Tumut Express 20 May 1910 OBITUARY MRS. GEORGE MORTON. To the monarch on his kingly throne, to the great ones in 'their perfumed chambers,' to the peasant in his lowly cot, to young and old alike, the Reaper's call is now and again heard with irresistible insistence, alas, too persistently demanding another soul, and it matters not what earthly ties are to be severed the call home is equally urgent. The young may die, the old must. This time it becomes our painful duty to chronicle the 'passing' of a good old septuagenarian in the person of Mrs Morton, wife of Mr George Morton, of Bombowlee Creek. Her death occurred at 1 a.m. on Tuesday last, the cause being apoplexy, at the ripe age of 69 years. Deceased was the daughter of the late William Piper, and sister of Messrs Thomas and William John Piper, of Bombowlee Creek. She was born at a place called Jerera, near Marulan, in 1840, and came to Tumut with her father and mother when about 8 years of age. They lived at Wyangle for a number of years, when Wyangle was owned by the late Mr. George Shelley, and then removed to Bombowlee Creek, to the property now occupied by Mr. Patrick McGrath. On August 4, 1860, she was married to Mr.. George Morton, at her parents' residence, by the Rev Patrick Fitzgerald, and the pair have lived happily together ever since. As a kindhearted, well intentioned woman, it would be hard to find her equal; a true helpmate to her worthy husband, and a fond and devoted mother to her offspring of ten. Three children predeceased her, viz : two boys (George and John) and one daughter (Mrs John Harris). No one visiting her once happy home on Bombowlee Creek was refused a cordial welcome, and charity was a virtue she ever cherised till her death. There are many to-day who have received it from her, and will miss her cheery presence, aud kindly advice. Being always of a sturdy and robust constitution, her illness dating back two months ago, gave alarm to her family, who used all the means in their power to render her relief. Doctors Mason and Browne were most assiduous in their attentions. It was fondly hoped that in August next husband and wife would have been able to celebrate, their golden wedding Mr. Morton is now in his 84th year, and we are glad to hear bears up bravely. Deceased leaves behind her four sons, viz : Messrs D. P. Morton (Temora), James (Tumut), Robert (Wagga Wagga) and Frank (Tumut), also; three daughters, Mrs. A. Keenan (Batlow), Mrs J Keenan (late of Korrumburrah, Victoria), and Lina Agnes, and 21 grandchildren. The funeral took place on Wednesday last, when a large cortege of mourners paid their last tribute of respect to the departed, whose remains were interred in the Presbyterian portion of the old cemetery. Mr. James Elphick was the undertaker, and the Rev. R. E. Davies officiated at the grave, and his graveside address was deeply affecting. We tender the distraught relatives of deepest solicitude. God has given thee light dear mother, And the shadows that darkened the past — The doubts that clouded the future Have been changed into joy at last. Thou hast passed o'er death's dark river, And we pray that, whate'er betide, We may some day dwell in the glory That shines on the other side. |
