| Personal Notes: |
|
Born at Beleura Hospital in Toogoolawah, Phyllis was the fourth child of Charlie and Rose. She was enrolled at Biarra State School in August 1929 at the age of five and attended for a short period until the school closed because of lack of pupils.
At the age of eight she stayed with her Auntie Alice (Himstedt) to enable her to attend the Esk State School. In the meantime, she had correspondence lessons for a few years with her brothers and sisters at the family home 'Merton Hall Farm' at Biarra. A year or so later, Phyllis rode, daily, the five miles from the family home to Sandy Gully State School or went in a sulky with her younger siblings and a neighbour's two children. During her last year of primary school, it was necessary to travel ten miles one day per week to attend the Toogoolawah Rural School to learn cooking and sewing. Phyllis won a State Scholarship and completed her Junior education as a boarder at Ipswich Grammar School. At the end of her schooling, Aunt Eliza (Andison) at Northgate offered accommodation and Phyllis, who had studied commercial subjects including accounting machines, worked with various companies in Brisbane and, later, in Grafton NSW. In 1949, having already visited Cairns, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney, she travelled for six weeks on the SS Maloja to the United Kingdom where she lived and worked for the next two years. Utilising the Youth Hostel Association amenities, she travelled throughout the United Kingdom and Europe with Australian Exchange Teachers. Phyllis worked her passage home on the SS New Australia, a ship that brought English migrants to Australia and shared responsibility for bringing fourteen children to Australia for the Fairbridge Society. On her return, Phyllis settled and worked in Sydney. Phyllis was also a member of the Central Methodist Mission and, as a voluntary secretary, assisted with the organisation of youth camps. Phyllis and John and their two children, Jean and Robert, moved to Parkes NSW in 1964, returning to Sydney six years later. Phyllis did casual work as a market research interviewer and subsequently in this field obtained a full time position as a payroll officer, retiring at the age ofseventy-two. |
