- Notes: Frederick Wheeler Vyner was born in 1818 at Eathorp, Warwickshire, England. When he came over to Tumut in 1839, his father-in-law (James Robinson) owned Coppabella Station on the Murray River.
Frederick Wheeler Vyner took over a large portion of George Shelley's area and held a Grazing Licence for the country extending from the present township to Wereboldera and back to the Gilmore Creek. His homestead was known as "Westwood" and was located on the Tumut Plains road about one and a half miles from the present town. Vyner was one of the first to introduce sheep and had many shepherds tending his flocks. One of his shepherds was named McFarlane who built his yards on the Creek which runs through the town and now bears his name. Vyner was an astute settler and when the Sir John Robertson Land Act came into force in 1861 he managed to purchase a total of 692 acres of all the river flats from the site of the Junction (Shelley's) Bridge on the west side of the river upstream to Wereboldera. In 1843 Frederick Wheeler Vyner married Margaret Jemima Robinson (sister of James Robinson J nr.) of Kimo Station at Nangus“. His wife died on 27 May 1912 aged 89 years. His son Robert Vyner was born in Tumut in 1846. In 1843 he was appointed a Police Magistrate and Mining Warden at Tumut. Frederick Wheeler Vyner died in Tumut in 1896 after living 56 years in the district. |
