Personal Notes: |
Captain George MacDonald39 settled at Adjungbilly station in 1838. In 1848 he held a grazing licence for 40,000 acres at Adjungbilly.
In 1850 C. and O. MacDonald are recorded as being the owners of Run No. 220 of 8,400 acres at Shaking Bog, Tomorroma. Captain MacDonald is credited with being the first person in the district to own a four-wheel buggy. At this period sulkies were not in use. In 1853 Captain MacDonald sold his Run to the Graham family who now own Bongongo Station near the original Adjungbilly homestead. In a small and sadly neglectedcemetery close to the site of his old homestead is an inscribed headstone. Sacred to the Memory of Captain Geo. MacDonald, late of H.M. 17 Regt. who departed this life on 25 Oct. 1853, aged 74 years. Alongside where his old homestead stood may be found today mighty and majestic poplar trees planted by this pioneer and nearby in what was the orchard, are the original old plum, quince, damsel and fig trees which really show their age. With them are aniseed and other herbs which were planted 130 years ago and still growing. Descendants of the MacDonald clan continue to live in this district. Another headstone in this old cemetery marks the last resting place of Jane Graham. "one of the pioneers who bought from Captain MacDonald. She died onl8 December 1902 aged 85years. By 1967 their station Bongongo became one of the show places of the district. |
