The Tumut and Adelong Times 3 Jul 1934
OBITUARY. MR GEORGE SIMS. Shortly after 12 o'clock on. Sunday the death took place at the Tumut District Hospital of a well-known Tumut identity, in the person of Mr. George Sims, who had reached the remarkable age of 92 years . Until lately the deceased gentleman enjoyed comparatively good health. Several months ago he showed signs of ailing and about a month ago it was found necessary for him to enter the District Hospital, where he was attended by Drs. Mason and Lawrance. He was discharged from the institution, but had to re-enter on Thursday last and passed away on Sunday as stated. The late Mr. Sims was born at Nimmitibel in 1842 and followed mineral and pastoral pursuits for practically the rest of his life on the Monaro, around Adaminaby and Kiandra. He was married to Miss Anne Dunne, a native of the Old Country, who survives him and is now in her eighties. Since his retirement the late Mr. Sims has resided in Kiandra, Adaminaby, Adelong and in Tumut for the last eight or ten years. The death of Mr. Sims robs a family of a devoted husband and father. He spent a long and useful life unselfishly, devoting his talents to the advancement of the district and has left behind him a record of good citizenship; and all sections of the community, especially his wide circle of very intimate friends, will miss him. Mr. Sims is survived, besides his wife, by five sons 'and four daughters — James (Corowa), Harry (Culcairn), Charlie, Jack and Edgill (Tumut), and Mrs. Beattie (Myra), Mt. Adrah, Mrs O'Rourke (Elizabeth), Sydney, Mrs. Casey (Mary), Adaminaby, and Mrs. Rees (Eliza), Gocup, and Mrs. J. Wortz (Sarah Ann), Tumut. The funeral took place to the C. of E. portion of the New Cemetery at 3 p.m. yesterday, the cortege moving from the residence in Richmonnd-st. Rev. F. W. Rettie officiated at the graveside and Messrs. W. H. Fuller & Son carried out the funeral arrangements. |
