Norrm Willis says 'George is shown as a Joiner (carpenter) on the 1861, 1871 and 1891 census of Whickham. He is Head of his own house there in 1891 at age 49 with Barbara Short, 69, his housekeeper. She may have been related to George's mother Mary as both were from the Blyth, Northumberland area and she had been with the family since at least 1871. (good clue for someone with time to follow?) There is a death registration of a Barbara Short on FreeBMD as age 74 (=born c1823), Gateshead, Q3-1897 10a 528.
The 1933 chart only shows he "married Jane" and a Jane is on the 1901 census of Whickham as his wife, age 47, born in Scotland. The 1891 census shows a Jane Young , age 35, born in Scotland and being a domestic servant for the Bates family living next door to George Willis. She may be the same Jane Young on the 1881 census as domestic servant, age 26, born Scotland, with the Heald family in Westgate Ward of Newcastle. FreeBMD has the registration of a marriage of a George Willis and a Jane Young in the second quarter of 1891 in Newcastle T., #10b-144. I have not sent for a copy to validate this marriage since they had no descendants.' |
