Personal Notes:
I have not found actual proof that this Francis Henry is the same Francis Henry, baptised 02 Jan 1827 at St Sidwell, Exeter, the eldest child of George's brother Henry Leigh Elworthy - but a number of co-incidences make me think he most likely is.

Scores of instances abound of perfectly respectable newcomers Down Under changing their names or inventing totally new backgrounds for themselves. People usually accepted what they were told and it was unlikely these details would be checked, but quite often dates do not match facts.

Old correspondence about George Elworthy mentions his NINE children, Frank being one of them (actually he had eight). Francis Henry's Devon grandmother was reputedly Grace LEIGH - he also had a sister Grace Leigh Elworthy.

His first Australian child was named Francis Leigh, then when a daughter appeared on the scene, guess what she was named - you're right, it was Grace! Co-incidence? I don't think so.

There are no personal details on the marriage certificate of Francis Henry Elworthy apart from the fact he was manager of a station near Cobar. On his death certificate his wife Mary said Frank's father was Hubert Elworthy, brewer and mother was Jessie nee PITT but a death certificate is not a good source of fact. Although supplied in good faith, the information is sometimes hearsay and
dependent on a good memory.

It seems exceeding strange - but the Francis Elworthy who was nephew of George had a younger brother called Hubert, who died aged four and a sister named Jessie! The father of Francis was not a brewer as such but he had been owner of a hotel which incorporated a brewhouse! Another peculiar bit is that Francis had a maternal aunt Sarah - whose married name was PITT.

(Our) Francis Henry Elworthy, son of Henry Leigh and Ann nee BAKER was definitely baptised at St Sidwell, Exeter on 02 Jan 1827 as shown in the IGI - but no other facts are known.

It is believed that Francis came to Australia with his uncle George Elworthy.

The other (or the same?) Francis Henry Elworthy married Morpeth-born Mary O'KEEFE at St Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Orange on 12 ApI 1881. Francis died on 24 May 1891 at Prospect.

The third child Thomas Frederick Walters Elworthy 27 May 1887 was born at Prospect. According to the birth certificate his father Francis was a Station Stock Manager aged 38, born in Exeter, England, and his mother Mary was 40. However, just four years later when Francis Henry died on 24 May 1891 at Western Road, Prospect from malignant disease of the mouth - he suddenly became 59!

His death certificate also said he had been in Australia for 40 years - two years prior to the known arrival of George's family and his cousins Ellen and Asenath Elworthy! As there are other inconsistencies, the 40 years may have been an estimate - he could have arrived with the others in 1853. Just three years later, Mary married widowed vigneron Arthur Remmington at St Brigid's Church, Prospect on 22 June 1894
