Obituary. MR. GEORGE BOON. After an illness extending over several weeks, Mr. George Boon passed away on Sunday morning last. After selling out his property at Wagragobilly about four months ago, Mr. Boon and his wife and younger members of his family settled at Cowra, and three weeks ago he was stricken with a serious internal illness from which he never rallied. The subject of this obituary was a son of the late Nathaniel Boon and was a native of Gundagai. Deceased was a thrifty, hard-working man, who was admired for his straightforawrd habits, and it is safe to say there were few better judges of stock to be found in the district. He was also a great horseman in his day. For many years he was a prominent member of the Gundagai Racing Club and P. and A. Society. Like many other men of his time, deceased had not the educational apportunities that are enjoyed to-day, but he possessed a wonderful mental talent that stood to him in his dealings through life, and his witticisms and original expressions will live after him. Few men could effect a transaction better than George Boon, who was popular with all who knew him. He had several thrilling escapes from death by accident in his 60-odd years of life as a bushman, and on one occasion had his body severely shattered by a gunshot, from which he made a remarkable recovery. The late Mr. Boon, who was 64 years of age at the time of his death, selected as his partner in life Miss Jones, daughter of the late Thomas Jones, and his widow and a family of eleven sons and two daughters survive him, viz : Messrs George Herbert, Percy Bruce, Thomas Norman, James, Frederick, Reginald, Leslie, John, Leo, and Arthur Boon (sons), and Mrs. D. Withers and Mrs. Aub. Naughton (daughters). Deceased's brother Alfred died only about a month ago ; but two sisters and three step-sisters survive him. The remains of deceased were brought to Gundagai by train on Monday morning, and were laid to rest in the South Gundagai cemetery at noon. Rev. H. F. Champion conducted the service at the graveside. Deceased's six sons acted as pall-bearers. |
