Hatfield arrived in Canberra in 1912 as a draftsman for the Department of Home Affairs, living at the Bachelor Quarters in Acton, playing cricket for the Canberra and Ainslie clubs and was a foundation member of the Canberra Rifle Club. He was present at the Canberra foundation ceremony on 12 March 1913.

He served with the 12th Field Artillery Brigade as a Gunner, arriving in France in March 1916. Hatfield returned to Australia in February 1919 before being discharged on 6 June 1919. He resumed his career with the Department of Works and by 1939 was Chief Draftsman, living with his wife and family in Forrest. Hatfield died in Canberra on 14 August 1962 and is buried in Woden Cemetery. His daughter, Joan, served in World War 2.

Description - height 5 feet 6½ inches, weight 122 pounds, chest 35 inches, dark complexion, brown eyes, dark hair, Church of England.
