Personal Notes: |
HANNAH KITTO/PETTS nee Havden
by Sue Prosser Hannah Hayden was born in Gunning, NSW, in 1840. Of English descent, Hannah was a grand-daughter of Third Fleet convict James Hayden, who arrived in the colony in 1791. Her grandmother, also a convict, arrived in 1801. Hannah was the second of six children born to Mary Budd and William Hayden. William Hayden bought his wife and young family to Tumut, NSW, in a spring cart in 1841. He was Tumut's first wheelwright, setting up his business firstly in the old township at the Mill Angle, and later moving to premises opposite where the present Tumut Court House stands. ln 1858, Hannah Hayden married Walter Kitto in All Saints Church of England, Tumut. Walter Kitto at that time was a gold-miner. The couple resided briefly in Adelong, but later moved to a property at Lacmalac, where they followed farming pursuits. Of the ten children to which Hannah gave birth, five were to die tragically ln February 1866 a diptheria epidemic sweeping the community, claimed the lives of Hannah's three daughters, Elizabeth aged 8 years, Jane aged 5 years, and Hannah aged 4 years. The fourth, and only remaining child, Solomon aged 2 years, fell ill, but fortunately survived. Seven years later, in March 1873, tragedy struck the Kitto family once again. Hannah's two youngest sons, John aged 6 years, and Walter aged 16 months, were accidentally crushed to death by a horse-drawn wheat-threshing implement. A further accident at Shaking Bog in October 1881, claimed the life of Hannah's husband. He was accidentally crushed by the trunk of a tree, whilst felling timber for an extension to his shed. Walter Kitto and the five children are buried in the Tumut Pioneer cemetery ln 1883, at 44 years of age, Hannah Kitto was to wed again. She married James Petts in All Saints Church of England, Tumut. It would appear that Hannah lived a fairly quiet life until 1903, when she nursed her friend, Mrs Amelia French, during her fatal illness, pneumonia. lt is said that Hannah was unremitting in her attention to her. Soon after Mrs French's death, Hannah also contracted pneumonia. Despite being "carefully attended by Dr Mason, and given all that loving hands could do," Hannah passed away on 11 June 1903, at 63 years of age. Hannah Petts was described as "a kind hospitable woman, and a great favorite with all who knew her." She is buried in the Church of England section of the Tumut Pioneer Cemetery |
