Obituary. MRS. HARRIET LAZARUS ÆTAT 100. With the passing, on last Friday afternoon, of Mrs. Harriet, relict of the late Mr. N. M. Lazarus, (who predeceased her 23 years ago) Quean- beyan loses its oldest inhabitant. Deceased was born at Burr, King's County, Ireland, and had reached the ripe old age of 100 years, about 78 of which were spent in Queanbeyan. The late Mrs. Lazarus had been twice married, her first husband being the late Mr. William Grogan, who left one son, William, who resides in Syd-ney. There were 10 children by her second husband, Maurice (Sydney), Alfred, Isaiah and Henry, (Queanbe- yan), Joseph (Sydney), Frank and Ernest, (West Australia), Mrs. W. A. Parker being the only surviving daughter; one son John and a daugh- ter Harriet predeceasing her. There are 48 grandchildren and 73 great- grandchildren. Mrs. Lazarus was of a retiring disposition and took little interest in public affairs, nevertheless, she was greatly respected by the whole district. She had the Spartan spirit of the old pioneer and until quite recently was able to go about her household duties and thread a needle without the aid of glasses, and her hearing was unimpaired. Her last public appearance was a little over a year ago, when Mayor Harris treated Queanheyan "Old Folk" to a picture matinee. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon, her mortal remains being laid besides those of her mother in the old portion of the Catholic Cemetery, and was largely attended. Members of the G.U.I.O.O.F. marched in front of the hearse, and also acted as pall-bearers; the Municipal Council and Fire Brigade were also represented. A number of choice floral emblems were placed on the grave. Messrs. O'Rourke Bros. had charge of the funeral arrangements; Father Haydon, assisted by Father Costello, officiated at the graveside. |
