Personal Notes:
George Franklin and Elizabeth Johnstone, the parents of the Franklins who arrivied in Australia lived and worked on Doonass. Although George farmed on the Estate he ran a hedge school at Doonass in 1807. In 1824 he was running the Church of Ireland Parish school in Clonlara (Protestant). He is important in the history of schools in the area. The 1807 info includes only on other school in the immediate area which was on the adjacent Coolisteige Estate

- Notes: Via a brief taxi ride around the area Beth and I visited Clonlara and surrounds in 2011. Near the town is Doonass where the Franklins lived. This Estate was originally owned by the Dillon Family who lived in a grand Georgian Mansion on the neighbouring Doonass Demesne. The Demesne is on the banks of the Shannon River. Doonass is the name for the waterfalls/rapids there.
