The son of Phoebe nee Morris and James Sims.
On 2 Mar 1833 at the Wiltshire Assizes George Maurice Sims was convicted and sentenced to 14 years transportation for stealing 11 pieces of rope valued at 4 shillings, from Richard Wearing at Trowbridge He arrived in Port Jackson, Sydney on 3 Nov 1833 on the ship "Aurora". George was given a Ticket of Leave on 20 Jan 1840 on the condition that he remain in the District of Queanbeyan. In 1842 George applied to the Colonial Secretary's Office for permission to marry Elizabeth nee Mullaly and was granted that permission. George and Elizabeth were married on 3 Apr 1842 in Bredbo and the witnesses to their wedding were Lawrence Harnett and Daniel Driscoll. The minister was Reverend Brennan of the Sydney District. George and Elizabeth had 10 (ten), children, John, Phoebe, George Richard, Mary Ann, Mary "Ann", Elizabeth, Rosanna, Joseph, Walter, and Henry John. Elizabeth predeceased Maurice on 18 Jan 1877. George Maurice Sims married Susan nee Jackson (Blyton) on 9 Apr 1878 in Cooma, NSW. They had 5 (five), daughters, Phoebe, Maud Ethel, Elizabeth May, Emily Amelia, and Rachel Margaret. George died at Peak View on 1 Jul 1911 and was buried on 4 July 1911 at Rose Valley. The informant of his death was his wife Susan Sims, of Pretty Tree Flat, Peak View, and the witnesses to his burial were Patrick Ryan and W. E. Lloyd. The following is an extract from Perkins Papers:- "Death: July 1st 1911; George Sims at home of Robert Blyton, Pretty Tree Flat, aged 96 years. Was a native of Burnima, England. Came to Australia in 1830 at age 15. Lived since in various parts of Monaro. Lived at Celeys Creek for past 20 years, and for last 14 years at Peak View. Was twice married, leaves a family of 16, - 11 by first wife and 5 by second, and numerous Grandchildren. He was a farmer & Grazier at Alum Creek and then at Royalla and owned some property in the town of Cooma. He claimed to be the oldest inhabitant of the Monaro district.
