OBITUARY MR. HARRY LAST The sudden death of Mr. H. J. Last, of "Shaftesbury," Cootamundra, came as a great shock to the town and district. He had been suffering with a heavy cold and went to bed with it on Tuesday last. Pneumonia developed, and on Wednesday morning he was conveyed by ambulance to the Cootamundra District Hospital. The illness, however, proved too severe a strain for his heart, and he passed away at 2.30 on Thursday afternoon. Deceased is survived by his widow, six sons— Cecil, of Muttama; Malcolm, Coolac; Ken, Muttama; and Don. of the Bank of New South Wales at Newcastle; Les. and Eric, and one daughter, Irene. Mr. Albert Last, of Muttama, is a brother, and Mrs. George Clout, of Brungle, is a sister. The late Mr. Last was born at Hillas Creek, in the Gundagai district, and in 1902 he married Miss Elizabeth Lydia Burke, of Wagragobilly, at the Wagragobilly Church. For a long time he owned "Fernhill," Tumut, which property had been selected by his father. In 1933 he sold "Fernhill" and went to Cootamundra, acquiring "Shaftesbury," which is just outside the municipal boundary, on the Wallendbeen road, and he has lived there ever since; and later he also bought "Rawilla," Muttama, from Mr. Keith Richards. As a boy he was a great cricketer, and was renowned for his bowling. He played with both Tumut and Brungle. Always a keen follower of the turf, he raced quite a number of horses, the best of which was Lord Gaby, who won 18 races out of 23 starts in the southern districts. He was a committeeman of the Cootamundra Turf Club and also of the Southern Districts Picnic Race Club. In his younger days he was also a good tennis player, while for a time he played golf. In his later years he took to bowls, and played in Cootamundra's "A"-grade pennant team. He was also a keen member of the Cootamundry Club. Not only was he interested in politics, but he worked hard for the Country Party. Only the week before last he drove to Wagga for the Country Party Electoral Council meeting. Always a football enthusiast, he was at Murrumburrah on August 14 when Cootamundra regained the Maher Cup, and he saw the match between Cootamundra and Temora the following week. The sympathy of the town and district is extended to this well-known family in their loss.

This public tree has about 60,100 people. Every person in the tree is related by birth or marriage to at least one other person in the tree - no strays. The people in the tree come mainly from four projects.
  1. My family tree. The original project begun about 1998. ID numbers less than about 6,000
  2. Canberra and Queanbeyan Pioneers. The next 30,000 begun about 2004. Sourced almost entirely from HAGSOC's excellent 'Biographical Register of Canberra and Queanbeyan'. The project began when I decided to add siblings, spouses and parents for a relation with an entry in the Register. 12 years work.
  3. Wagga Pioneers. I moved to Wagga and thought I would extend the Queanbeyan project by adding people from Wagga Wagga & District Family History Society's 'Pioneers of Wagga Wagga and District'. About 10,300 people added over about a year.
  4. Tumut Valley Pioneers. During the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, I decided to extend the above projects by adding pioneers of the Tumut Valley. Initial sources were Snowden's 'Pioneers of the Tumut Valley' and 'Relict of ... Lives of Pioneering Women of Tumut and District'. Excellent references published by Tumut Family History Group. I've also added material from newspapers of the time - especially, death records, obituaries and weddings from 'Tumut and Adelong Times'. This project is in its early stage and might take a few years. I plan to extend to the upper Monaro (Adaminaby, Kiandra, Cooma, Jindabyne).
I upload new information to this website about every 3 months. My motivation for these projects is to provide public information for people seeking to trace ancestors and what became of them. Much of the information I provide can be difficult to find.
If you find errors - anything incorrect (dates, places, wrong parents, wrong children), and you have evidence, I would love to fix them. Or, if you have information that would extend my projects, do not hestiate to contact me on the email link below. I do not publish information on living people - which means I'm not much interested in people born after about 1920, and I usually distrust material from before about 1770 without extremely good sources.
