JAMES McEVOY was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1808, and as a young man came out to New South Wales. In 1835 he had settled at Boloco and the following year married Mary Sheil, who is said to have been the first white woman to cross the Snowy River. Their child Mary, who is credited with being the first white child born on the far side of the river was born in 1839. James McEvoy afterwards took up the Wollondiby Run, of 11,520 acres. He died in 1873, and had a family of twelve, and two sons - John Sheil, born in 1850, and Peter, born in 1857 - still reside at Wollondiby.
James McEvoy was born on July 25, 1808 in County Wicklow, Ireland, died on October 2, 1877 in Wollondibby near Jindabyne, NSW1 at age 69, and was buried in Moonbah Cemetery, NSW Grave 23a. Notes: James McEvoy was a convict who arrived in Sydney in 1830. He had been tried and convicted of sheep stealing in Ireland and sentenced to transportation to the colony for life as it was his 6th conviction. James and Mary were married in 1836 at Molonga by Father Therry. They had 12 children. In 1837 James was granted a grazing license at Wollondibby. • Occupation: Settler, farmer. • Religion: Catholic. • In 1837 he lived in Wollindibby Station, Jindabyne, NSW. |
