Henry Hargreaves continues part of their story after the 1852 Gundagai Flood;

I was nothing daunted while I had my health I soon got a job on the river boating people & property over at which I made over £30 in less than 3 weeks at the end of which time our son came over from Mount Alexander & brought 15 pounds in money which gave us sufficient to start with to the Bendigo diggings where we arrived safe after 3 weeks travelllng. Sold our horses saddle etc. for over £80 w1th wh1ch we commenced to dig, took in one mate which made four of us. We did not get anything scarcely ounce of gold, when our money was all spent 5 weeks was gone no signs of striking anything. We had sunk 7 holes in the ironbark gully & was going down with the 8th when my son said to me father I will go down to the Bendigo creek & see if I can strike something there & let us not leave this hole unbottomed, had no opinion that there could be any gold there as it was close to the dray road along side of the gully. We Were at dlnner at the time our John had gone down 3 or 4 ft. After dinner we went into the hole & before we had dug 6 ft. deep we had taken 7-pound weight of gold. Our partner then said he would go home so he & me & another bought saddles & bridles & started for home. Left my 2 sons behind who made over £80 more in less than 2 weeks. I left gave them £20 to go on with. I got home all safe & sound although we could hear the robbers & bushrangers were murdering on our right & left. I started down to Sydney immediately to fetch our eldest daughter, (who we heard was there) & who wanted to come home. Our journey was not very pleasant however we got home safe after all this time. Adelong creek had broken out & gold was beng got in the bed of the creek, so we started digging again which we kept at off & on until 1861 when we moved to our present farm 145 acres at Tumut, where we are now living.

Henry Hargreaves died 18th July 1899 at Mundongo, Onear Tumut, aged 88. Susannah Hargreaves d1ed 17th August 1887 at Tumut.

The Gundagai Independent and Pastoral, Agricultural and Mining Advocate (NSW : 1898 - 1928) Sat 22 Jul 1899 DEATH OF MR. HARGREAVES
At 5 o'clock on Tuesday morning last, there passed away to that bourne from whence no traveller returns, Mr.Hargreaves, of Tumut, at the ripe old age of 88 years. Some 6 or 7 months ago the deceased received a severe fall, displacing his hip, and the injury he received could not possibly be remedied by medical skill. Eventually mortification set in, and the grave claimed another victim. The old gentleman was possessed of a sound and robust constitution, and but for the unfortunate mishap (which was the cause of his death) it is thought he would have lived to a great old age. Deceased had five sons and three daughters. Four sons are living, but the
daughters are all dead. Mr.John Hargreaves, of Tarrabaudra, is a son of deceased, and Mr. John Beale,of Tumut, a son-in-law, by first marriage. One son has been living in America for a number of years. Mr. Hargreaves arrived in New South Wales in the year 1840, and shortly afterwards came to Gundagai, where he was employed as puntman.Afterwards he entered into business as a hotelkeeper, his hotel being situated on the flat near Prince Alfred Bridge. The great flood of 1852 washed away the town of Gundagai, and left hardly a trace of Mr. Hargreaves' hotel or its belongings. He was one of the pioneers of Adelong, Tumberumba, Tumut, and Kiandra, and could relate many stirring incidents of the early days. Mr. Saunders, who was well known by old Gundagai residents, married deceased's eldest daughter, and went to America. By the way, Mr Saunders, at one time, owned Tarabandra property, now owned by Mr. John Hargreaves. The
deceased was laid to rest in the Tumut cemetery on Wednesday, a large concourse of persons gathering to pay their last tribute of respect to one who in life endeared himself to everyone
who had the privilege of knowing him.
